For me being individually recognized is the hallmark. I first experienced it as a young adult when staying with my cousin at a whist club in NYC where my uncle was a member. After check-in, the entire staff knew our names, even ones we had never seen before. The experience was before the era of ubiquitous computers and CCTV, and blew me away.

To be fair I nearly all time get ice in the US, nearly never in Europe. I never got small slippers (would be funny in my case), but sometimes big ones. Hard copy of newspaper is quite common in Europe, even after Covid. Don't care for Champagne or wine, but get it quite often.

are there any "ultra luxury" "hotels" that are not casinos? i guess it is all relative. like burj al arab and aman new york. but latter mostly low room count.

many here like / prefer / require properties that do not resemble "hotels" , and the properties with least resemblance are the top safari properties.

there are a lot of great old threads here mostly focused on service, i feel like it was the threads focused on 'rooms' that covered most of the things mentioned here

to me, service can feel like a regular service industry establishment , or it can feel like something else , and that is about preference more than anything else

for example if casualness is the preference, should be able to guarantee that at exclusive-use properties, which includes some of the top safari properties

even in biggest cities, there is going to be some of variety in terms of properties, although most 'unique' in city are likely in terms of historic / historical aspects

Quality of towels, sheets, robes, slippers, laundry services. Many places check off all boxes, except those. Nothing like staying at a property where on daily basis you get freshest, softest of towels, beautiful sheets, laundry is done same day and is in a condition I rarely see it in NYC, so I make sure to have it done the last day before heading home.

I like cats, but I'm also pretty allergic, as are between 10-20% of the world's population.

I wonder if there's enough cleaning of the common areas that it's not an issue, or are guests like my crying and sneezing their way through the lobby?

That's a beautiful cat though. I'd probably take a bit of crying and sneezing on my way through the lobby, and even risk a few scratches behind the ears.

The in-house Labradors at some Canadian Fairmonts (the Empress recently, and Chateau Lake Louise a few years back from personal experience) are always one of my favorite touches.

Well, with all cleaning the cats are around. I guess if someone is really hyper-allergic another hotel should be the choice.

Daily new sheets? That's too much in my eyes, even as I once was in a hotel which changed it twice daily. All 3 days or even once a week is fine for me. Frankly I use them longer at home.

I live for the little details, and on our most recent trip to France last month, I was so happy that some of the hotels in which we stayed paid attention to them as well.

That being said, since the pandemic I've yet to have a full-on old-school turndown service. Some places at which I've stayed have done most of these things, but I haven't stayed anywhere recently that has checked all these boxes: used towels replaced, toiletries organized neatly on a linen cloth, curtains drawn, mood lighting turned on, television or radio playing soothing music, carafe of water on each nightstand, slippers placed beside the bed on linen mats, chocolates/candy/treats and/or note or cards with inspirational quotes/weather forecast placed on the pillows.
