What happened to GHM?

Hi, does anyone know what went wrong with GHM along the years? It seems like they only remain a shell of what they once were, a bit like Regent I suppose. I was surprised to learn that The Legian in Bali (and the Tanah Gajah Chedi) are no longer part of the group, especially with The Legian's management replaced by a dubiously named company called, LHM.

Both Ralf Ohletz and Hans-Joerg Meier are behind LHM, so they definitely know what they are doing. Both worked with AZ back in the day.

I think the demise of GHM started when The Setai Miami was violently taken over by owners with armed personnel escorting management off property... then they gradually lost key properties, such as The Nam Hai. In many cases other operators could achieve higher rates and better margins, which is a pity, especially since GHM offered and still offers good value for guests in most properties. Take The Chedi Muscat for example, where they do offer a lot of benefits, especially at Club level.

GHM these days is more or less a marketing operation, with very little management contracts. Andermatt is also owner-run and it took them years to break even, I think 2020 was the first year they achieved that.

Let's see if they can get things rolling again in China or India.

Thanks for the insight scented! I didn't quite realised there was a hostile takeover of The Setai back then - and shame about GHM's current state of being more as a marketing operation. I also hope they make a comeback, along with Regent's anticipated comeback under IHG.

Having said that, I guess my suspicions about LHM are unfounded about then , you're completely right. And after browsing around even more, it turns out they're opening another Legian in the neighbouring island of Lombok, and so far the pictures look great - I noticed a lot of nods to Jaya Ibrahim's very symmetrical style.

The Legian Sire in Lombok was designed by pupils of Jaya Ibrahim, hence the similarity of style. It is a stunning property.

Hans-Joerg is one of the most engaging and hands-on operators I have ever encountered. He and the staff at The Legian are amazing and it's always a toss-up whether I head there or to Amankila in Bali (two complete experiences, I know). I'm looking forward to the new hotel in Lombok, which I know Hans-Joerg has been focused on for a few years.

You’re right, and I’m absolutely delighted to know they’re continuing his legacy.
