Best ‘City Resort’ Luxury Hotels

Thought this would be an interesting idea for a thread. Particularly where we are with our kids (given their age) and what they like to do, we have been trying to find ‘city resort’ type hotels. Our criteria usually includes:

- Proximity to a significant/interesting city we would like to visit (usually with an interesting museum or other cultural offerings)
- Ideally, a good view/natural setting
- Ideally, free transportation into the city
- A nice pool and resort like ‘grounds’
- Luxury hotel

Our list (looking to add to it!):

- Belmond Villa San Michele (beautiful view over Florence from Fiesole, great shuttle into the city)
- Istanbul Four Seasons at the Bosphorous (great pool right on the river)
- Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo (great view, Taormina May be small enough that this is just a resort and not ‘city resort’)
- Dar Ayniwen, Marrakech — this is one of my favorite small hotels (not as luxury as some here might expect, but beautiful grounds and great shuttle to city)
- Villa Cora, Florence

Any other hotels you’ve stayed at meet these criteria?

This is an interesting an useful thread. A few I've stayed it:

Four Seasons Jumeriah Beach, Dubai
Hotel Arts Barcelona
One and Only Cape Town
Ellerman House Cape Town
FS Florence
The Setai, Miami
The Majestic Cannes
Beverly Hills Hotel

Ditto on The Beverly Hills Hotel in LA. Also the Bel Air although it is not to my taste.
Rancho Valencia outside San Diego
Rancho Encantado (FS) outside Santa Fe

Also Four Seasons Athens, which will be rather en vogue in the next months.

Not so sure if it will be "en vogue" next months, I stay sceprical and didn´t book it so far (in trade for additional nights at Amanzoe). But agree it fits the description also for me it´s a resort near a city.
Gran Hotel La Florida Barcelona comes to my mind, also perhaps San Clemente or JW Venice.

Aman Tokyo can be on this list. Their wonderful onsen, workout facilities, spa, infinity pool and pure tranquility.

What are we counting as a 'city'? Obviously Tokyo, Bangkok etc but is Florence (300,000 population) a city? If so, then Chiang Mai (130,000 population) in which case 137 Pillars House and Anantara Chiang Mai (and Four Seasons on the outskirts)? Also potentially opens up a huge amount of Chinese cities but prominently certainly something like Amanfayun in Hangzhou.

Also, Lodhi New Delhi would be another one for consideration.
Banyan Tree Seoul - anyone been? Loose consideration for this one and Banyan Tree Shanghai (didn't get a chance to check this out) and Banyan Tree Macau if Aman Tokyo (city tower block) could be considered.

Banyan Tree Seoul is horrible. An older Korean hotel converted to a Banyan Tree with low ceilings. If you like your bedroom with an odd giant bathtub smack in there or want to do laps in slightly longer pool-ish tubs in the suites. These "open" pool tubs make the rooms get incredibly humid too.

The property is somewhat secluded being on Namsan mountain and nothing else around. Does have a giant outdoor pool though.

there might be thread(s) for this, cant recall
zurich's dolder was one that came up before
other swiss - la reserve geneva, park hotel vitznau

"museum or other cultural" = any regions to exclude ?
any examples or types, particularly for museums ?

outside rome - La Posta Vecchia
northern italy - villa feltrinelli, castiglion del bosco
venice - could combine island with aman (garden)

FS cairo? combine with FS alexandria
india - taj palace, oberoi, aman, raas, alila

if UAE
outside city - al maha, anantara qasr al sarab, zighy bay
inside city - dar al masyaf, one & only, burj al arab

I'm be shocked if they didn't build a pool. Why put a handicap on the property from the beginning? All the other leading Kyoto luxury hotels have them and the one that doesn't (HR Kyoto) would probably like one.

Kagehitokiri Mar 7, 2019 9:43 am

onsen.. (in spa building)
residences/villas may have onsen
only 24 rooms and 2 2BR villas

pools are indoors >
RC 134 rooms
FS 140 rooms (+30 more residences)

fayun added outdoor pool later
kora punakha added outdoor pool recently
