Retreat at the Blue Lagoon, Iceland

I just experienced a one night stay at this new hotel. It was a great stay, and very well organized considering they just opened in April and it's their first high season at 100% occupancy. It's a great place to spend a night on the way in or out of Iceland and experience the famed Blue Lagoon without the masses of tourists at the original main location. The Lagoon is private for hotel guests and only a very limited number of day guests who must pay $400 for 4 hours. Despite the fact the hotel was at capacity and their 6 day visitors ( maximum allowed) were there it did not feel crowded in the private Lagoon at all. The Lagoon winds around so there are a number of places to go. If you choose you can even visit the main Lagoon but why bother when you don't have to! There is also a " ritual" you can experience in the spa which consists of a number of face and body masks. All of this is included in the price of your hotel room. The ritual part was ok, but I really enjoyed most the Lagoon.

The hotel has a very nice design aesthetic. There are 2 room types- jr suites and suites. There are 3 floors and various views. In the top Lagoon suites you can have your own entrance into your own private section of the Lagoon but this requires a minimum 2 night stay so we just opted for a top floor Jr suite since we are only there 1 night. I felt the room was a bit small but for one night it was fine. If staying longer I'd opt for the full suite. I actually really liked the top floor view as you can see the Lagoon below, and the moss covered landscape looking toward the mountains. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've experienced. Bathroom was small and a bit dark but fine for the night. One large sink, walk in shower and tub outside the main bath situated to take in the view. All the modern stuff. There is a small balcony where you can sit outside should you choose. Windows are floor to ceiling glass. Mini bar with waters, teas, coffee, beers and small bottles of wine all complimentary. There is a small gym and a yoga room. And of course a full Spa.

We had dinner in their fine dining restaurant, Moss. It was quite good with a choice of 5 or 7 course tasting menu and a choice of classic or prestige wine pairing, as well as a decent but very pricey wine list ( Iceland taxes!). We really enjoyed the meal and did one each of the pairings. Ironically we both thought the classic was better with the food than the prestige ( prestige nkt that prestige IMHO).

Anyway, it was a quick stay right after landing in the airport. We really enjoyed it and I would highly recommend on your way in or out of Iceland. I'll try to upload photos later. Now in Reykjavik for 2 nights at the Tower Suites. I'll write that up after we depart but I can say already the view is absolutely stunning from the top floor of the highest building in town!

How many total rooms does the hotel have and what's the (approximate) proportion of various room types (junior versus senior suite and senior suites with the direct lagoon access)?

Does the hotel provide airport shuttle service?

Interesting! We were just there and I really wasn’t crazy about it or even the blue lagoon itself, though I could see this place as a one day stopover.

What didn’t you like about the hotel or the Blue Lagoon?

I eventually will post a review. We stayed two nights in early July in a lagoon suite. Lots to say about this place. It is best as a one night stop-over.

We're booked for 2 nights in November. This is going to be interesting.

Too, there is no great effort to disabuse tourists of this notion.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

Very special, quixotic, gorgeous and annoying.

I have tried a dozen times to upload photos but no dice. Use your imagination. Update, added photos

Check In

We arrived early, some 90 minutes before check-in and waited two hours. Staff was kind, brought us champagne and tea but it was a long wait nevertheless. Small venue, few lagoon suites so I was unsurprized but annoyed nevertheless -- we were paying $6K for two nights and would be leaving at 7:30am the morning of departure. Not much they can do about this yet the cost is such that automatic annoyance spikes at even modest occasion.

Nevertheless, we were sumptuously attended to by Hermann who was both fun and suave. Check-in itself was the usual routine, nothing special other than lovely courtesy. By which time we were quite worn out having arisen at 5:30am for preparations to depart the cruise ship at 8am. We hired car and driver for what was a particularly great custom tour before arrival at the Retreat.

Escort by Hermann to the suite was straightforward and facilities and amenities covered well.

private lagoon

As you read my comments, keep in mind we paid $3K (U.S.) per night and had to book two nights in order to have a lagoon suite.

The suite is small but designed well on the face of it, especially if one is younger with knees, back and hips in good order. At 68 and 75, the living room furniture was dicey for us. Living room is very small and cluttered. Too much oversize sleek furniture. Yet, lovely shelving with an assortment of books about Iceland including fiction and mysteries. This delighted me! one entire wall floor to ceiling windows looking out to a gorgeously different landscape. This view, alone of other ostensible benefits, came very close to fulfilling expectations. I never have been so riveted by a view that changed hour by hour. The 20-hour days helped with that. It never got dark-dark.

Extravagant bathroom facilities but quite dark with confusing lighting controls. Fabulous gargantuan but dark shower. Lovely bath with a view. Dark toilet alcove. Dark double-sink area. Did I say DARK? Yes, dark. Nice small-size shampoo, conditioner, face mask, moisturizer, etc.

Bedroom adequately sized, comfortable bed. Nice linens. Two sides of floor to ceiling windows with ceilin to floor curtains which are needed because, in July, it never gets quite dark.

Free mini bar, lots of wine. If you run out, just call for more.

Now, then, the entire point of the lagoon suite is your own totally private lagoon. It looked fabulous, I could not wait to immerse myself. Fortunatey, I prefaced my plunge with a sit on the first entry stair. Whereupon, my feet slid out from under me and I landed inelegantly on mid spine, ouchies. So, and make a note of this!, the lagoon water is rendered milky blue by several minerals one of which is ... well ... silica. As in silica = slip! And so, readers, I did go ass over teapot. I never let Jim get even close to our private lagoon, too dangerous! Also, damn, it's hot.

So, our private lagoon, the whole point, was a grave disappointment.

Service

Staffed entirely by young folk with the best smiles and kindly natures. There are ups and downs but intent is always aspiring of special care. I wanted to adopt them all.

When I wanted more wine, it appeared quickly. Room service food was less swift and much less accomplished.

Service needs work. At these prices, most guests will be semi demanding.

Again, we love Hermann.

Dining

Food was ok, good enough. tres expensive but that is the way in Iceland.

Location

OK, now we're talking. This is why you go to Iceland. Actually I did not want to go to Iceland, it's where the Norway cruise disembarked.

For a treeless place, Iceland is amazing. Simply stunning. I would like to return asap were Jim in better mental fitness.

Look at my photos, assuming they are right-side up. Yikes, they won't pist.

There are 60 or so rooms. I think only 3 or 4 lagoon suites.

No free shuttle to KEF. Taxi easily arranged, about $75 U.S.

I think Retreat is definitely a one night stop over, and think it's the ONLY way to experience the Blue Lagoon. If you stay 2 must get full suite but I thought one night just right. Until we heard this hotel was opening, we planned to skip the Lagoon as too crowded, but we really enjoyed it for one night. It was t a place I'd be rushing back to, but really enjoyed being able to experience something famous in Iceland without the crowds.

Tonight in Reykjavik we had dinner at the Michelin one star restaurant, Dill, and thought Moss at the retreat at Blue Lagoon was better. Now we are not expecting San Francisco ( where we live), Paris or
London, Tokyo high end restaurants as it's Iceland! But for here we thought Moss pretty darn good. Better than expected and Dill quite frankly was a bit of a disappointment. So far really loving Tower Suites. Not for everyone, but views amazing and I didn't see anything close in downtown Reykjavik. I'll write it up later when we leave but so far very happy. Again not for everyone no restaurant ( they do have breakfast and can arrange catering for dinner, etc) , no gym, no Spa etc, but 5 star rooms and views.( have to get the right rooms - 2 out of 7). Did not see anything close in downtown.

Instead of making you wait in the lobby, couldn't they have temporarily given you a regular room while the suite was being made ready? I've certainly had that done for me at hotels where suites were a whole lot cheaper than $3k a night!

I was there the first week of June and while I did not stay I did do an inspection. Agree it is great for a one night stopover but I woild be hard pressed to want to stay more than one night. The private lagoon area is lovely but part of the fun of the Blue Lagoon experience was mingling and talking with people in the lagoon. The hotel itself is very minimalist. If you are starting or ending a cruise in Reykjavik and do not want to stay in town it is a great alternative. We always have a car when we are in Iceland so we can explore. Actually the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Blue Lagoon is located and its an uncrowded, beautiful area to explore.

Sent my wife on a birthday trip to Iceland with some friends and they spent an evening (6 hour rental) at Lava Cove in Blue Lagoon

It was described to us as: A completely secluded, self-contained spa within the spa at the Retreat. This extraordinary suite—which includes a private lagoon, a wood-burning fireplace, and a butler—is a place of abundant comfort and wellbeing.

The ladies agreed that the description was fair and that it was quite a luxurious experience with impeccable service and a beautiful product.

The in-water massages were charged separably but were not super expensive.

One thing I forgot to mention in my review is the bathrobe scenario. Given we were only there for One night ( arrived at 4:30pm from London so fortunately did not have to wait for our room!), and were only there to experience the Blue Lagoon without the masses, I really appreciated you could change into bathing suit, robe and slippers in your hotel room and walk through the lobby to the Lagoon and just pop in! In the morning we were checking out at 11:00 so we're able to have breakfast in our robes and pop into the Lagoon for a final time! That to me was a nice plus. No need to go to Spa and change if you didnt want to or have the time. Only way I'd do the Blue Lagoon but then I'm not a "crowd" person!
