26 rooms = buyouts (some dont even stay night)
images are not ultra luxury resort villas, with pools
and neither are aman beijing and tokyo (or wana)

some may prefer aman kyoto to amanemu
much smaller size vs tokyo, fewer nonguests

suiran rates dont vary much, but smaller m2 sizes

26 room perfect for kyoto, insane rates and not empty
note how extreme rate low vs high is at FS and RC
its fairly similar to maldives low / rainy vs holidays

compare number of seats/covers
toyko - lobby plus 3 restaurants
kyoto - arrival, living, dining, spa buildings

kyoto resort map may be interesting, 8 acres gardens, 72 acres forest
nemu only 2 buildings, 3 sets of rooms may be more private than villas
nemu pretty compressed footprint, googlemaps satellite now has image

what did people here want aman to do in kyoto?
if aman kyoto could occupy any land (or building) what would have been ideal?
aren't beijing, shanghai, kyoto examples of 'different' ways aman can do cities?

aman website
Restaurant in the Dining Pavilion will be a landmark addition to one of Japan’s most celebrated gastronomical regions. Showcasing the unique culinary tradition of Japanese haute cuisine, multi-course dining experiences

Living Pavilion with its central fireplace and glass doors opening onto an ornate garden terrace will be no less inspired. Serving home-cooked Kyoto obanzai style cuisine throughout the day, guests can also enjoy afternoon tea and reserve bamboo picnic hampers

garden spaces dotted around Aman Kyoto are perfect for outdoor events – from small private dinners
seems no Amaniwa, presumably because in kyoto, vs Amanyangyun being outside shanghai

Amankora in Bhutan, where Hill personally selected the five lodges sites...took some 15 years. Secondly, a resort in Kyoto, originally touted as the Amaniwa. Hill was first introduced to the site one snowy January morning and recommended it to Zecha who visited the following week. Only 20 years later has construction commenced.

A frequent visitor to Japan since 1975, Hill

Impressed by his work, Zecha – who was just starting out with Regent Hotels at the time – pushed a few projects his way. Hill describes him as a patron and good friend; only a narrow lane separates the gardens of their homes in Singapore.

In case anyones curious, it looks like Aman Tokyo will be handling reservations for Aman Kyoto for now.

At the moment, though, they dont have any info on rates or when reservations will open.

Some time in March - I think online system might take a while though so will likely be after that unless they've synched it up REALLY well. Some of the agents on here should have booking details soon even if they aren't loaded into the online system and should be able to take reservations (see @BESVISOR's post above).

Example - separate, but related, Amanoi has a new 2-bedroom residence that is open for reservations, but it's not loaded into the online platform/system yet.

Imagine being RC...3 years ago, you were the top game in town and now, FS and Aman both in the arena.

This happens. If the product is good enough everyone may come and you still are the top game. There is no rule that an Aman must be better than a RC. BUT I think they have in wide parts different target-Groups. Many who stay at a RC wont stay at an Aman. Guess more overlaps with FS as there isnt a program like Bonvoy but still some different kind of guests.

I think this depends on their cost-structure.

Japanese do like luxury and the new flavor of the month. I could see affluent Japanese doing their best to get into Aman Kyoto and paying whatever it takes. Aman has really boosted their Japanese profile with Tokyo and Emu and having Japanese bloggers go out to all the properties for coverage. I don't think RC will lose out too much, as, other people will fill in the gaps for what is still a very new and luxurious hotel.

Hyatt Regency Kyoto should be afraid of all of the new competition. Their hardware and facilities were inadequate before RC arrived and now they're hopelessly behind in the luxury game.

I'm not a fan of the location of the Aman - the RC is exactly where I want to be, based what we like to do in Kyoto, and we really like the hotel. That said, I agree that it will mint money, as a certain demographic of visitor will pick the Aman anywhere as a knee jerk reaction. I used to sort of be that person but was underwhelmed by Tokyo at the price and was disappointed in a second visit report at Amanpulo and it is no longer my default. This might work in our favor, as availability and pricing at the RC might become
more appealing.
