Question Salzburg Austria Hotel Recommendation

We are planning to visit Salzburg Austria because I am a Mozart fan and it appears to be a very nice place to visit.

We are considering hotels and have honed in on three options for us:
1. Hotel Schloss Monchstein
2. Hotel Goldener Hirsch
3. Sacher Hotel

Would anyone care to render an opinion re: the hotels above relative to location, accommodations, restaurant, service, etc.?

I know this is subjective and each has high ratings on some of the travel sites but I trust people on flyertalk more so than travel blogs themselves.

As always, thanks in advance to anyone who responds and to those who take the time to read this posting I would like to wish you a very Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Art Hotel Blaue Gans is the only place to go if you find space. Just beside the americanized Goldener Hirsch in the middle of the festival scene. Quirky design and real service including a fantastic terrace as outside restaurant.

They do valet parking and their concierge is great.

Mönchstein is on the hill and quite "outside" and the Sacher a choice if you want to spend more than necessary.

I stayed last winter at:

https://www.hotelelefant.at/?lang=en

It is a very nice, quaint hotel on a side street.
My room are virtually no view but amazingly quiet with the window open
Nice breakfast and a very cozy bar next door.
great service

Since you asked, here is my opinion on the Goldener Hirsch. We stayed there many years ago and didn't have a wonderful stay. It was summer and hot outside. Our room at the top was stifling. Opening the window to let some air in made it loud because Getreidegassse (the pedestrian street outside our window) was full of revelers. So, did we want to be hot, or to be cooler but with a loud street outside the window. It seemed as though the owners knew they had a presitigious property and didn't put out any extra effort to make sure their guests were happy. Okay, but what about now? I don't know if there are different owners than when we visited, but know this: the rooms are small and no matter what their website shows as far as well-appointed-looking rooms, it's maybe not what you might expect. I wouldn't stay here again...I would choose something less expensive because it can't be any less cozy than the GH. These days, I choose by comfort, not by what points I might earn or use. Gute Reise!

The Goldener Hirsch was sold last year by Starwood (to the owner of Schloss Mönchstein, a German billionaire). An more than overdue top-to-bottom renovation is supposed to start this summer, and I would avoid the hotel until that is completed.

I agree with the previous comments regarding Blaue Gans, this is the place to stay.

I too have stayed at Hotel Elefant. It is not a luxury hotel, just a wonderful, small, cozy, special hotel that is impeccably maintained. The building is 700 or 800 years old and named for Hannibal's elephant. It is in the heart of Old Town Salzburg on a pedestrian street. There's a variety of room types. I have stayed in a small single and a one bedroom suite with balcony, and I don't think there is a bad room, only different sizes.

Hotel Sacher Salzburg

Schwarzstrasse 5-7 Salzburg, AT 5020

The little brother? (15 Photos)

Hotel Sacher Salzburg

I had to stay a few nights in Salzburg for business. Normally I stayed at the Kempinski (IC) Berchtesgarden but this time I needed a hotel at the city. I decided to book the Sacher which is a historic hotel, my parents had a good stay in the 90s. It´s also a depandance of the hotel in Vienna but has as Österreichischer Hof also a rich history.

We booked a Junior Suite with city view which was 465,00 € per night under a 4 for 3 rate with Virtuoso ameneties.  Ameneties were in particular a 82,00 € credit.

Check In

We arrived by car and first I didn´t find a place to stop my car. There was no doorman outside and only after I did a round I decided to drive on the walkway. Another option is to stay right on the street and to block one lane of the road.

From outside we could see constuction work is going on.

Many rooms face this road, judge yourself if it´s a good location. From the river Salzach the hotel looks much better:

When we entered the lobby we were greeted very friendly and checked in fast. A doorman tooked our car key and our laguage.

The lobby is classical with a nice staircase, a lot of marble and fresh flowers.

Bar

At the hotel major renovations are ongoing, so they remodel some rooms and the Salzach Grill. Over the day (beginning at 7 in the morning) there were loud constuction noises which wasn´t too great.

Room

We were told we got  a Junior Suite with view (not sure if it was an upgrade) and were escorted to it. The rooms seemed to be relatively newly renovated and done nicely. The furniture was high quality and many mirrors made it look bigger. With this point we reached our problem, the "suite" was small. They claim it hat 35 to 40 sqm which seems to be correct. While it looks nice it´s small and normally for me unacceptable. Nevertheless I wasn´t ready to pay 600 € more per night.

The view from the small balcony was nice

While the room was tiny the bathroom was good sized with a shower as big as the tub, separated toilet and a (not working) TV.

Special were the cosmetic, Sacher chocolate line:

I don´t know what others think but it´s not my cup of tea to smell after choclate during the day,,,,,,

Dining

One evening we had dinner at the Gourmetrestaurant Zirbelstube, a restaurant for "ausgesuchte Feinschmecker". Prices are high and the menu mainly consists of meat. The restaurant is rustic and smelled a little bit strange. I felt uneasy all the time, terrible room.

6_14.JPG

Surprisingly many guests came from outside. I say surprisingly as Salzburg offers some very nice options and Sacher is not one of them for me. Food was pretty good, but surely not gourmet and overpriced. Service was OK but sometimes a little confusing. We were ofered only a game stew which was for us of course completely uninteresting. Another table with English speaking guests were offered a dish with turbot. A German speaking guest was offered the same dish with "Forelle" (trout). So either they varied this dish from table to table or one offer was inacurate.

Location

The hotel is located at the Salzach just opposite the historic center which you can reach over a pedestrian bridge right in front of the hotel. It´s 5 to 10 minutes by foot to most major sights. It may not be as ideal as Blaue Gans or (the closed) Goldener Hirsch but still very good. If you have to visit Mirabell or something at the Neustadt it´s even better than the formentioned hotels.

Breakfast

The breakfast was a buffet with some limited options to order. Only sweet dish to order were pancakes which are not very Austrian. We asked but they had nothing else like Pallatschinken. One morning we had great pancakes, the other morgen they were terrible. At the buffet were items of more or less good quality. While for excample some salads were pretty good, scrambled eggs were mediocre as were the cheese selection. They also had the original Sacher cake (not my taste), original Sacher Gugelhupf and the original Sacher Tea. Everything is "original Sacher". While I understand it with the Sacher cake (they sell it at the Cafe at 7,10 € per piece) it´s pure marketing in all other cases. The "original" tea or choclate was nothing special. Service was so so.

Overall

Our stay was OK and Sacher is a nice hotel. Nevertheless it´s overpriced in my eyes and not as good as they think themself. I would propably return but only if I must stay in the city. I´m not enthusiastic

Thanks for posting. We stayed there back in 2011 and the renovations do look nice. Did you visit the gym at all? That was horribly out of date during our last stay.

I think I was there a year ago or even longer, en route to Vienna. Best aspect about the stay was being able to leave the next day. Thanks for the update!

I've stayed at both the Goldener Hirsch and the Sacher in the past (around 5 years ago). GH was slightly more charming with its traditional decor but I found the food, service, and location of the Sacher superior. GH was closer to the shopping whilst Sacher slightly nearer to the sights, theatre, and the river (view).

Both stays however were "average" by luxury hotel standards and were on the pricier side for what one got. If you have time to spare and don't mind the 45 minutes drive into the (Sound of Music) mountains, I'd highly recommend Hotel Schloss Fuschl, which I thought was much more polished and memorable.

Yeah, I think it's a proper description. Nice I'm not the only one who thinks the prices were quite high for what you get.
Funny enough Salzburg is full of these sound of music stuff but like most Austrians and Germans I never heared about it and I mean it wasn't promoted this much the years before. At least I can't remember.

I find the Sacher Salzburg to be mediocre. The JR Suites have nice decor but cram with unnecessary bulky furniture so much so that I had house keeping removed them to create a better sense of space. The river view is quite nice. Overall, I find Salzburg is a boring place.

Highly recommend the Kempinski Berchtesgaden. Beautiful resort.
