I covered this briefly in my article of FS Biarritz - http://www.headforpoints.com/2016/05...ays-wifi-gogo/

It is now the Canary Riverside Plaza Hotel.

On the face of it, it may be surprising that the hotel is unbranded after FS ceased management. However, I know that Four Season management contracts are incredibly tight and often include a clause which stops a hotel operating under another brand for a number of years if FS is forced out. We saw this in Provence a few years ago where the ex-FS is still not rebranded - http://en.terre-blanche.com/

no claims re management contracts have been backed in courts/etc
most of the below rebranded as opposed to being independent
former FS >
1995 - clift SF - FS sold - morgans
2003 - seattle - FS sold - fairmont - FS accepted settlement
2004 - berlin - FS sold minority/lease - regent
2005 - pierre NY - lease of hotel from co-op changed to taj
2005 - newport - pendry
2009 - exuma - sandals (sandals acquired)
2009 - aviara - PH - FS accepted settlement
2012 - provence (1)
2013 - chinzanso (2)
2014 - jakarta (?) owner built another FS in jakarta
2015 - dublin - IC franchise
2015 - carmelo - hyatt franchise (was hyatt before FS too)
2015 - philadelphia - hilton curio franchise, managed by sage
2015 - FS RC chicago - marriott RC franchise, managed by sage
2015 - bangkok - anantara (bangkok owner owns anantara)
2016 - canary wharf (3)
2018 - vancouver (?) lease ended jan 31 2020
2020 - pudong (regent)
2020 - shanghai (?)

2020 - santa barbara , new york (?) - same owner, negotiating with FS

canary wharf owner was an original investor along with ong & FS
(alwaleed & ong were also investors in canary wharf development)

interesting FS held 25% of regent HK, sold with others to IC in 2001
FS manages regent singapore, other regents dropped FS management
update: singapore dropped FS after regent was acquired by IHG

Old thread but relevant question:

Looking at these photos now, I wonder how this property met Four Seasons standards in the first place.

Had it been short of Four Seasons standards from the beginning, or have luxury hotel standards just improved massively in the last ten years?

FS Canary was always the option if you wanted to stay at a FS without the Park Lane prices. It was often much cheaper (200 instead of 600 or so). I always found the room product not too great and never stayed. But I wouldn't say standards really changed since this time.

I stayed at the FS on two occasions and liked it very much. The rooms had vast picture windows giving a wonderful view of the London skyline and the rooms were noticeably but stylishly minimalist. I remember having a great dinner at their Italian restaurant and using that spectacular swimming pool - a bit of a faff to get to but worth it. Most of all I liked the location - as Londoners who long ago moved to the countryside, we behaved like tourists and used the excellent river boats to get us into the West End area and also down to Greenwich. I'd happily stay there again - they also have good car parking arrangements.
