Uruguay hotels?

I have a convention in punta del este.
I'll arrive 2 days early.(Will land in Montevideo)

I can stay at the convention hotel but maybe I can spend these 2 extra days somewhere else.

The FS is not an option as a little too far and not between Montevideo and punta del este.

I looked at Virtuoso.com and there are only 4 or 5 hotels in the country.

Does Montevideo a nice city to visit ? I was surprised of the lack of luxury hotel and the lack of chain hotel (seems that the Sofitel is the best hotel)

Any other option between Montevideo and punta del este ?.

Just want to relax for a couple of days at usd 500 / 1000 nt

Thank you so much.

For PDP, I would just book a suite at the Conrad and enjoy the beach and casino. It's not the FS, but it is comfortable and probably the best service in town.

thank you.
The convention is already at the conrad so I wanted to try something different and if possible better. Seems that better is not easy .
You can't rent a bed at the beach there ? in the area ?

Any Updates ?

I have a trip coming up just like the original poster.

Wondering if there are any updates on luxury hotels. Are the Conrad in Punta del Este and the Sofitel in Montevideo still viewed as the best although not true luxury hotels ?

There's a Fasano Punta Del Este, that ought to be better

two of the three vik hotels have positive comments here

(two on beach, including new one which was planned as setai)

All the good places in Punta require a car in my view.

Vik is the top end but in Jose Ignacio - not Punta (about 30-45 minute drive). Though with great restaurants/beach club in the area.

Conrad (like most hotels in PDP) caters to Brazilians and now has nice beach club but is flashy and out of place. Fasano is in La Barra and a bit out of the way - they will be closing for renovation I believe (I suspect at the end of the season March/April). Also worth looking at is the Mantra in la Barra and the Serena in Punta.

Sofitel is the best in MVD but it depends on what you are looking for, as it is nearer the airport in a nice area but not in the center of town. Some good restaurants in walking distance.

I highly recommend the Vik in Jose Ignacio. Too far for the business part of your trip when you need to be in PDE, but if you stay a couple of extra days it is great. Just stayed in December. It is about 45 min from PDE, very quiet area, but very chic. Very nice hotel. Go the La Huella restaurant on the beach for lunch or dinner. It's good food, beautiful views, and fun people watching!

Thanks for all your insights. I have made plans to stay at the Sofitel in Montevideo for my extra days.

The Vik sounds great but perhaps not worth the USD 1,500 per night for me to kill time there, at least when I'm alone...

Went around L'Auberge , PDE , recently on our cruise shore excursion . Looked an interesting boutique hotel & gather from what the guide said , rather nice & may belong in this forum .
Would likely stay there for a couple of days to satisfy my intrigue , if I ever return ;)

It was a very hot day & we chose not to have champagne in another grand hotel , name escapes me now .

Conrad has Holiday inn room type
same old and dated furnitures than at least 15 years ago
the ocean view is nice (all rooms have ocean view)

Suggest in MVD to walk over to Garcia for dinner. In PDP don't focus to much on the hotel - best to decide on what it is you want to see/do and pick an acceptable choice based on location. There just aren't that many options as 90%+ stay in apartments/houses. Make sure to rent a car.

My suggestions would be a day at Jose Ignacio (beach) with lunch at La Huella and a visit, stopping at Manantiales and La Barra on the way. Get some medialunas at Medialunas calentitas on the return in La Barra. I also recommend the museo del mar (great exhibit on Uruguay beach culture), fundacion Pablo Atchugarry (open air museum and gallery), and Casa Pueblo for a sunset drink. Can all be done in about 2-3 days.
