interesting, thanks. apparently marriott never listed as franchise, i guess i did not check marriott financials at the time. perhaps more complex IP/history than chicago, which is listed as franchise.

When Cesar Ritz builds your hotel 100 years ago I only imagine the complexity and the actual historical nature of the contracts.

not sure if that is why bvlgari london is a franchise (their only one)
Ritz Madrid became MO, not sure if theyll keep name after renovation
No, R-C do not manage Montreal. It is owned and managed by the Torriani family, who use R-C purely for marketing purposes. The GM there is Andrew Torriani, one of the sons of Marco Torriani (ex GM of Hôtel du Rhône/MO Geneva). It is a very personally run hotel.

I will be in Montreal in early Sept. Which is the better hotel these days - the St James or the Ritz Carlton? Will only be there for 1-2 nights.

I would suggest Ritz Carlton for anything up to a Jr Suite.... past that St James does have some interesting rooms. There are also several great 4 star boutique hotels in the same location as St James which is very charming for a tourist in the dying days of summer

Has anyone been to Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac? It looks very cool from the outside, but inside looks a little dated. Also with 600+ rooms not sure how the service would be.

I think my review is self-explanatory but if I can add a few words regarding service I think it was fine, better than many other Fairmonts in Canada. Regarding hardware despite the renovations it won't be mistaken for Fairmont Chengdu, Istanbul, or Amman, which are a few that I visited recently with fantastic new & shiny hardware but in any event it's a historical property and it stacks up well with other older Canadian "castles" such as Banff, Charlevoix, or Chateau Laurier (Ottawa).

I’ve stayed at Frontenac twice last year and if you’re into that Disney world feel and hoards of crazy people at breakfast along with random cruise ship tourists running in to take a photo (carrying a huge tele zoom, no less and as most of the time as far as cruise ship crowd goes) while you’re having lunch - go for it. On a plus side, views are good, main restaurant is not bad.

I prefer Auberge Saint-Antoine and would only stay there since switching from Frontenac during last stay.
