For those with limited time and unlimited funds I can see how the Emperor Penguin/South Pole trip might have some appeal. The big issue here of course is the weather. Having been to Antarctica and South Georgia, but not to the Pole, I know how vicious the weather can be. It would be interesting to know how many of these trips are either cancelled or abandoned halfway through . . . I wouldn't want to shell out thousands and never get to the Pole because the weather closed in.

And another thing. This may sound trivial but it's actually very important to ask what clothing is being provided by White Desert. Ships usually provide an outer parka, inner puffer jacket and have wellington boots for hire. These bulky items are vital for going to the region and therefore do not need to be taken as luggage. Seabourn even gives everyone a lovely beanie with a penguin icon. Thermal underwear, inner and outer socks and gloves are bought by individuals.

The emperor penguin colony visited on this trip is at Atka Bay where the recent BBC documentary Dynasties was filmed over an 8-month period.

Excellent trip report FlyerEC! I knew we should have gone to Norway instead of Iceland!
I like that you could choose the activity level that you were comfortable with, on our group that went to Iceland it was above my comfort level and I had a terrible experience on the glacier walk!
How was the food?

Thank you .
Nellim is in Finland / Suomi , I first visited & stayed in Oulu for a few months in autumn / winter of ‘ 78 .

The meals were surprisingly good and especially compared to about 25 years ago . This trip was done in January ‘13 - how time flies !
Perhaps we were cold & hungry like after the day / morning activities .
We did not travel in a group but for the activities chosen , there were others who joined us , if they had chosen the same time and “ excursion “ . We met everyone during the nightly Aurora Borealis chasers as everyone came to Finland for that
Think I forgot to add a photo which will show everyone in a “ time lapse “ shot , can you imagine he told us to freeze & hold still . We were already frozen as it was !! Will add after this .

Thanks for sharing!

So I suppose I needn’t bother asking about the air con, @FlyerEC?

You are welcome .
Well ..
Think you will do fine even though the heat in the bedroom was too much for me / us . Usually prefer it at 16 C .
So we were relieved that the windows were not sealed , and yes , we had our windows open a little and that really helped

And off the back of FlyerEC's recommendation, we went to Nellim in, I believe, December '15 and absolutely loved it. I wouldn't call it luxury by any stretch, but it remains to this day one of our favorite travel experiences.

Oh yes , pleased that you had a great time too .

Not AMAN standard for sure for the main building where we were then .
But we were shown stand alone cabins before we left which were more like Gani with private saunas . That is where we will be & reccomend to others for future stays

When we were in Iceland I wanted air conditioning as the rooms were all too hot. They have heating from their many thermal springs and it was too damn hot!

I have been in the general vicinity and its usually pretty cold there year round. So "his royal coldness" should be ok.

I am curious as to what others might consider to be some of the most amazing luxury properties in various remote locales. I am mostly interested in more unique, non-chain luxury properties, but I am always willing to consider a truly unique property even if it is part of a bigger chain. Remote luxury is the critical element.

Let us know what remote luxury properties and specific accommodations particularly impressed you...but please only include properties that are truly remote (the outskirts of a city don't count IMO).

For us, these have included:

Vatulele Island, Fiji (The Point)
Lizard Island, Australia (The Pavilion)
Singita Boulders, South Africa
Azura, Benguerra Island, Mozambique (Presidential Villa--not recommended)
Amangani, USA (Amangani Suite)
Amankila, Bali, Indonesia (Indrakila Suite)
Amanjiwo, Java, Indonesia (Borobodur Pool Suite)
Amanwana, Moyo, Indonesia
Kinloch Lodge, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Wharekauhau Lodge, New Zealand
Aqua Expeditions M/V Aria, Peruvian Amazon

Hopefully to be added after our upcoming visits:

Hotel L'Anjajavy, Madagascar
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, Rwanda
Amangiri, USA (Mesa Pool Suite)
Mukul Resort, Nicaragua (Oceantfront Villa)
Very well curated list! esp Singita Boulders and Wharekauhau Lodge!

The Kumaon is located in Kasar Devi, above the city of Almora, in the vicinity of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. The Kumaon is 375 km by road from Delhi. We can recommend the route and stops for your road trip from anywhere in the plains. Transportation can be arranged from the Kathgodam and Ramnagar railways stations, or from the airport in Pantnagar.
