Travelocity's "top 10 favorite hotels in New York"

Apparently based on 8600 customer reviews, these are Travelocity's ten favorite hotels in NY.

1. The Benjamin
2. The Carlyle
3. Room-Mate Grace
4. The Surrey
5. The Iroquois
6. Trump Soho
7. Morgans
8. Desmond Tutu Center
9. Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel
10. Hilton Garden Inn Times Square

Shaking my head at most of these... The Benjamin #1 ???

Is it a good or bad thing I havenīt even heard of the majority of the hotels listed? :p

I always have to think of Einsteinīs remark on stupidity when these kind of rankings are published and - even worse - copied without a blink of an eye by most media outfits.

You donīt need a PhD in statistics to understand that customer satisfaction ratings which are mainly based on perceived value, relative quality compared to other hotels in that category and relative quality compared to hotels the guest has stayed in before are NOT suitable to create an absolute ranking of hotels.

If I were The Carlyle, I would be really worried about their inclusion in this list.

It's a Travelocity poll. Does the majority of people who stay in luxury hotels book through Travelocity? I think not. So the responses are skewed by those who do.

I pay no attention to sites like Travelocity, Tripadvisor (except for the pictures), Yelp, when it comes to luxury hotels and even dining. Heck, even the "luxury travel" magazines don't get a whole lot of creed with me.

Thankfully, a site like this one here at Flyertalk exists.

I donīt even think their findings were based on a poll. The ranking seems to be based on the ratings provided in the reviews which doesnīt make any sense at all.

I'm trying to find anything redeeming about the properties on this list, and I think I came up with something:

The Desmond Tutu Center - run by the good folks at Aramark - at least has (a) remarkably big rooms (by local standards), (b) is priced well, with a lot of dates below $280 per night and (c) a location which is close to the meatpacking district.

The room-mate grace seems interesting for travelers on a budget.

These ten hotels all pale, of course, to the Comfort Inn - Fairgrounds and Casino in Tampa...One of the top hotels in the country, according to the reliable ratings at TripAdvisor.

I have stayed at the Carlyle- and it is very classy if a bit dated. The suites can be spectacular with breath-taking views- however also prices to match.

The Trump Soho I have been interested to test out- but it certainly won't fall into a top 10 list unless there is something I don't know- it looked like an economical alternative to some other choices.

I've seen the website for The Surrey and I have to admit it looks very nice. The bathrooms look a little small but there is a pretty rooftop terrace with food and beverage service. And room service is from the ground floor Daniel Bouloud restaurant. Location is good. I might give it a shot sometime.

Interestingly, 4 of the top 10 are Virtuoso hotels! Anyone want to guess which one's? :D

But what's even more interesting are the Virtuoso hotels that were left off the list: Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton Central Park, Mandarin Oriental. These are arguably the top three hotels in NYC (and this is sure to start an argument!) :)
