The 2011 New Amanresorts and GHM Development Thread

One of the most interesting themes in the Luxury Hotels Forum is speculating about new Amanresorts and new GHM Hotels/Resorts - since these resorts are mostly the best in service, design and location.

On this threadstarter, I will bring together all your news, rumors and contributions, keeping the list constantly up-to-date.

(There are 3 older threads ("New Amanresorts...") which show the history.)

NEW AMAN - WITH PHYSICAL EVIDENCE:

- Amanruya in Bodrum, Turkey - 36 pool pavillions, some with ocean views and some without. Had a soft opening with a raving Gallivanter's review in Summer 2011, is finally opening Christmas 2011. Kagehitokiri found the brochure: http://www.re-pdf.com/?f=8539&x=efaa...d56b8b11413982. Rates start above 1000 Euro.

- Amanheli - a 45 Million-Dollar-project which offers almost 360 degrees panoramic sea views at Porto Heli project, Greece (http://www.portohelicollection.com). Architect Ed Tuttle. It is an exclusive villa community including a 40-room Aman hotel integrated with 40 Aman villas and a spa and is nearby some other developments, including the later featured, GHM-managed Kilada Hills Golf Resort. A good 200 kilometers from Athens. http://www.amanvillasph.com/introduction.php. Construction photos: http://www.dolphinci.com/index.cfm?page=1226, newer ones (thanks paul2) here: http://www.dolphincp.com/media/2011/...2010_FINAL.pdf
Gallivanter & I say: Opening March 2012...

- "Amanduna" in Comporta, Portugal (a natural reserve 1 hour from Lisboa), opening in 2013. Next to Park Hyatt etc.: http://alcacergolf.com/Location/StrategicContext/. Here the very promising masterplan - only the ocean is missing (sic!): http://www.herdadedacomporta.pt/foto...erplanaman.jpg

AMAN - SOUNDS REAL:

3 (!) Amanresorts in Gabon, West Africa, according to Gallivanter's twittering and paul2's flyertalking, starting with:
- Aman at Phare de Gombe Beach, first spotted by Gallivanter's on http://www.eturbonews.com/21821/aman...on-west-africa, scheduled for an early 2012 opening according to Gallivanter's tweet.
- Aman at Kangou waterfalls (acc. to paul2, and http://www.e-travelafrica.com/single...st-africa.html)
- Aman at Hippo Beach (sources see Kangou waterfalls)

- Aman Vinh Hy in Vietnam, found by Hubertus on Denniston Architects website: http://www.denniston.com.my/webpagev2/projects.html Gallivanter's speculating about a 2013 opening, with links to location http://www.phongphua.com/images/tintuc/DSC04303.jpg and villa-pool-mockup http://www.phongphua.com/images/tintuc/DSC04319.jpg
Also found these construction fotos: http://peterminhle.wordpress.com/

- Amankea on spectacular Kea Island in Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kea_(island)) 60 kilometers southeast of Athens - designed by FS-Sayan-Spaceship-Architect John Heah, found first by Ericka at http://shares.telegraph.co.uk/news/a...56597&epic=DCI. Some fotos here (found by paul2): http://www.dolphincp.com/media/2011/...2010_FINAL.pdf - but also saying, that it received approvals, but no decision yet for progress of construction.

- Aman in Nevis, St. Kitts & Nevis. Broke ground beginning of 2011 according to Gallivanter's twittering & first spotted here by francophile. 40 pavillions + 40 residences, planned to open in 2013, designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, rivalling a Four Seasons which is always in development there. http://www.thestkittsnevisobserver.c...s-tourism.html

- Aman on Playa Grande, Dominican Republic, a Golf Resort designed by John Heah, 40 rooms, 40 www.playagrande.com, Sources: Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/markets/feeds/...fx4490014.html & developers detailed press release http://www.reuters.com/article/press...08+RNS20080103). Most likely a 200-room-GHM Golf Hotel nearby (see below).

- Aman Göcek, Turkey (Architect Kerry Hill), rumored to me by an Aman manager, first specified by paul2.

AMAN - SPECULATIVE/VAPORWARE

2 Amanresorts in Morocco:
- Aman in Essaouira - Gallivanter is twittering about Aman buying a Riad & connecting house in the costal town of Essaouira. Very good - since it would be great having an Aman Beach Resort connecting with Amanjena in Marrakech.
- Aman in the Morocco's Mountains - Gallivanter is reporting, that they are also looking for a property in the mountains.

3 Amanresorts in China:
- Aman in Lijiang, north western Yunnan Province, according to amanforever starting construction mid 2010, also quoted on Forbes (found by travel4vitality): http://onforb.es/m7WoLz. Lijiangs Old Town is Unesco World Heritage, with the largest number of timber houses still in their original Naxi village setting.
- Aman in Diqin area northwest of Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, China, coming closer according to bearbrick (http://www.gokunming.com/en/blog/ite..._diqing_county) (both places not too far from each other)
- Aman in Dali, also Yunnan Province in Burma direction - a city, famous for marble and a huge lake. First mentonied by Gallivanter's Guide.

4 (!) Amanresorts in Brazil, according to paul2, starting with:
- Amanoca close to Angra dos Reis, 2,5 hours from Rio de Janeiro. JM Gathy from Denniston will be designing. Only 20 room resort plus private villas for sale, on 70 acres of land including beach and marina. http://www.1888pressrelease.com/luxu...pr-345589.html and, now very good: http://www.atlasholdingsintl.com/projects/brazil.php
First spotted by Air Junkie. Opening "not before early 2013" according to damaxer91. Cheesy non-Aman website: http://amanoca.com/
- Aman at Alagoas, a spectacular site on the north east of Brazil, mentonied by paul2. Actual status: postponed.
- Aman at the Amazon. Told by Zecha in interview in 2008 (found by Kagehitokiri). Status: Pre-development.
- Aman at Pantanal (first mentioned by paul2). Status: Pre-development.

2 Amanresorts in Australia:
- Aman in Perth, Western Australia. Aman is "in talks" to convert The Old Treasury Buildings, a heritage site, and add a slim tower to the back of the building - to get an Aman Hotel with 90 rooms. Not date set yet. Found by Kagehitokiri on http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/20...Six_Star_Hotel and by paul2 via Gallivanter on http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news...-1225937869685. Gallivanter's twitter: Opening 2015 - and since it's her, we believe!
- Aman Sidney at Goldfields House project on Circular Quay, with Kerry Hill as architect - Aman is "mooted" for it, according to Gallivanter's twittering.

2 Amanresorts in Jordan:
- Aman Dibeen, which is close to Jerash, "an amazing Roman city" according to vuittonsofstyle, opening in "an ecologically sensitive forested site" scheduled "end 2012" by managers John Vasatka & Tania Rydon who already left Amanyara for it, according to paul2.
- Aman at Wadi Rum Desert, check and scroll down http://www.jdc.jo/en/node/33 (found by paul2)

4 potential Amanresorts in Malaysia:
- Amancrag atop of Penang Hill (800 meters) at Penang Island, Malaysia. Spotted first by south_sea99, it will be the conversion of an old colonial hotel into a 20 villa Amanresort, most likely with quite spectacular bungalow design. See http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...963&sec=nation and at the end of this clip from min. 3:16 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5ArDgHsRbk. Planned opening in 2014, now some bureaucratic problems...
- Aman at Desaru Coast, not far from Singapore on the south-east - spotted by Kage at http://destinationresorts.com.my/our...icpartners.php with very optimistic opening date 2013
- Aman in Johor, South Malaysia, in a development zone disgustingly featuring two theme parcs (sic!) next to Singapore, according to nama. More planning here, found by Kage: http://www.asli.com.my/DOCUMENTS/GEM...mal_180808.pdf - long time nothing heard.
- Aman in Pulau Besar, North Malaysia, on the Island of an inland lake (Source: http://malaysia-travel.suite101.com/...n_and_air_asia and http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...0&sec=business) - also long time nothing heard.

- "Aman in Douro Valley" (UNESCO world heritage site, famous for its wine), architect JM Gathy according to GG, but according to vuittonsofstyle Aman pulled out. According to Gallivanter's Guide, there could be another one in Porto by architect Kerry Hill, but this was not confirmed by my Aman-source.

- Aman in Mozambique, East Africa, happening according to Gallivanter's twittering.

- Aman in Tanzania, East Africa, according to kalihikai.

- Aman in South Africa, first called by vuittonsofstyle. kalihikai added, that Aman already bought land and startet development.

- Aman in Venice, Italy, according to Gallivanter's Guide at Palazzo Papadopoli (http://tinyurl.com/3yqhmbl), which is in San Polo and has only a way too small garden, not far from the tourist-overflowed Rialto Bridge.

- Aman in San Marino, according to this article http://www.sanmarinonotizie.com/?p=36580 found by Trickster10.

- Aman Tokyo in Otemachi district, scheduled for 2014 according to vuittonsofstyle. paul2 found the following Bloomberg-quote: "Slated for completion in 2014, the building will be located on the headquarters site of the former Fuji Bank. It will feature six below-ground and 38 above-ground floors." (http://tinyurl.com/ydp3w57)

- Aman in Hawaii - paul2 rumors, that ex-Amanusa-GM Monty Brown is developing something there...

- Aman in Cyprus - in or around the formerly legendary and now haunted Verengaria Hotel in the Troodos Mountains (http://www.flickriver.com/groups/542...l/interesting/), as rumored on flyertalk by namaguide with possible opening date 2013

- Aman on Banda Island, Indonesia, as reported by Groombridge: "A 20-room renovation of an existing colonial era building on the remote island of Banda Niera (one of the nutmeg islands). The building is at the opposite end of the town from the ocean, abutting the woods."

- Aman in Cavtat, Croatia near Dubrovnik (and not far from Montenegro), hinted by Vuittons and Nama, found at http://www.bjelasica-komovi.com/file...consulting.pdf

- Amanseramai in Loreto, Mexico. On Google, there is some reference (for example http://www.starksilvercreek.com/2008...-bay-upda.html, http://www.investloscabos.com/blogs/...los-cabos.aspx) - and about the name "Amanseramai" (http://www.hotel-rugs.com/other_projects.html)

- Amanmara in Kenya, spotted by Paul2: "If you try to open www.amanmara.com you are brought straight to the main amanresorts website. (...) Online reference to Amanmara here (number 87): http://www.slideshare.net/pagodahous...d-cn-interiors"

- Amanresort at Sukarta, one good hour from Yogyakarta and a little more from Amanjiwo. According to user Sundarma, construction will begin in spring 2010, so an opening could be expected around 2012 - which seems unlikely to me...

- Amancaya in Norman's Cay, Carribean, "finally got permissions" according to AirJunkie and opxzaw on flyertalk. I also found a funny government-permission link including financial details: http://www.thebahamasweekly.com/publ...m-002657.shtml

- Aman in Vancouver, as rumored by Gallivanter's Twittering.

- Dubai Aman near the Airport - "a unique lifestyle resort at DWTC's Dubai Trade Centre District" (http://propdubai.com/news/1091/index.php). Sounds disgusting!

- AmanESB in Mexico, Estero Santa Barbara, way down at Baja Californica near Mulege, 600 km south of Tijuana (http://www.esterosantabarbara.com/bajacasur_big.html). Big plans including an Aman Resort, Aman Villas, Golf Course (http://www.dmkgolfdesign.com/portfolio-amanesb.aspx), other Villas and so on (http://www.esterosantabarbara.com/resort.html). Once again the Gathy-Guy is the architect, has nice villa-pictures on his website http://www.denniston.com.my/webpagev...orts_Baja.html (see "The Gallery"). According to Air Junkie temperatures are very hot there...

- Aman Palau:
. maybe on the site of a former Nikko Hotel on one of the 250 Palau Islets, 500 miles southeast from the Philippines, opening unknown. According to a finding by Kage, "the project which will begin construction in the second quarter of 2009 will see completion in 14 to 16-month time", which it didn't.
. maybe on Kayangel Island, also in Palau, opening unknown
(First Source for both projects: Gallivanter Guide).

- Aman in Riviera Maya, Mexico, opening unknown (Source: Gallivanter Guide).

- Aman Pearl Island in Panama (part of a huge development project at Pearl Island http://www.pearlisland.com/), found by paul2 at http://deworldwide.com/clients. Gallivanter's twitters, that this one is not likely too much, because this development is too structured.

- Very, very speculative rumors about Amanresorts in Amman (Jordan), St Petersburg, Sicily, Bermuda, Maui, Costa Rica, Kenia, Cuba, Los Angeles and New York on flyertalk.

- Close to death: Aspen

- Cancelled:
Bangkok at Firehouse near The Oriental - cancelled because of people not willing to move out.

The 2011 New Amanresorts and GHM Development Thread

http://www.thestkittsnevisobserver.c...s-tourism.html

"In 2011 the construction of a shopping centre in Charlestown, the Cosmetic Centre at New River, Marina in the Cades Bay area and the construction of the Aman Hotel at Indian Castle will be ‘massive’ as over, 200 persons will be employed permanently from the Aman development alone,” said the Hon. Joseph Parry

"With the contributions of the Four Seasons and the Aman Hotel, Nevis would be placed among the crčme de la crčme of Tourism estinations,” commented the Premier.

I'm not convinced the Aman approach will work in the major cities. As a business hotel, the Aman in New Delhi gets 'mixed' reviews. I've stayed at Summer Palace during a business trip, and I can't imagine returning unless I was in Beijing on vacation. As a business hotel, Summer Palace was at best, poor.

The Aman Summer Palace is in my opinion by far the best hotel in Beijing. I would choose this magic place both for leisure and for business meetings. When I stayed there last time, I splitted between Summer Palace and Park Hyatt in the city, which was a mistake indeed...

That means: The Yamu is out! Still under development, but not as a GHM resort.
Andermatt will most likely be the first of the new to open.

summer palace has the location incl after hours access, and at least the great wall excursion sounded very good.

in a PM, Groombridge raved about the excursions in delhi. extremely positive about the property, while negative about other some other properties that are well regarded or mixed here. report should be interesting.

tokyo would have gardens, but not like FS chinzan-so.

Agreed as a leisure hotel- for most having business in Beijing you will be looking at a commute of 90 minutes each way every day to the CBD- or more.

As the opening for Chedi Andermatt is announced for Winter 2013/2014 (http://www.andermatt-swissalps.ch/as...%20Project.pdf), the other ones would be really, really late then!

Banda- Spice Islands

Well, can't remember if I mentioned it last year. Some work has begun plus new boat ( s )- it'll be a nice & welcome extension to Amanwana & the Komodo expedition. Now for more adventure - it'll be just that gettiing there & if you thought going to Amanwana was stretching things
