This article says the Aman Summer Palace is serving shark fin soup. If true, this is beyond sad. Mr. Ericka and I will write a letter.

Edited to add.....does someone have the GM name/email at Summer Palace?

Shark fin soup has always been a favorite dish for some Chinese....
I'm not surprised if Chinese/Asian guests ask for it

I have the GM contact info now via PM. Thanks.

As for the shark fin soup, we have enjoyed spectacular diving and snorkeling at Amanwana, Hotel Bora Bora, and Amanpulo, etc. and have always appreciated the way the Aman resorts have protected their natural surroundings both above and below the water. The shark fin soup (besides being offensive) isn't in keeping with their brand.

Thanks Ericka for pointing this out. This is outrageous. Unfortunately, this type of practice is continuing and even in some Southern California Chinese restaurants, Shark fin soup is being served. Please share the contact info so that we can contact the GM. I will also contact the headquarters.

quite a faux-pas... hope this is not true...

PS
I noticed that the website has published the new brochures of Amanfayun and Amangiri

Both places are spectacular... and the pictures have made me Aman-horny!

Where is your problem? Should your views rule the world even in China?

Personally I agree that it is disgusting to eat shark fins from an environmental respectful point of view. On the other hand being from a French background I eat - oh horror - foie gras and frog legs.

Aman is probably not the owner of the property, but has just a management contract and the owner, well he is probably Chinese.

P.S.: You are welcome to remove your business from Aman. I would rather not become involved in a fight with you. I will write today to the Aman regional manager (who I have the pleasure to know) encouraging him to keep with local culture.

There are numerous restaurants / pharmacies in Beijing that serve shark fin soup and tiger p*nis. Aman, due to its emphasis on diving destinations and tiger safaris, shouldn't be one of them. Anyone who wants to experience such things can be directed to an appropriate spot outside the hotel grounds.

Again, I agree with you, but there might be other people behind Aman controlling such decisions at this property. Not serving these dishes unfortunatley will not change the world (up to us not to order them and eventually demand will die out) - I feel more guilty about my foie gras and frog legs .

I was thinking of ending at the Amajiwo (3 nights) after 2 nights each at the Amandari and Amankila, but don't know if that's a lot of traveling to be doing at the end of a honeymoon. We will have just come from a week in the Maldives, so I don't think we're going to need a ton more beach time...

I have stayed at the Amans in Bali with Amanjiwo and Amanwana many times. The people at Amanresorts will make this seamless for you. They provide an excellent airport service and (in your case) the flight to Jogjakarta (or Solo) is short and the drive to Jiwo is pleasant from Jogja, longer but interesting from Solo.
Enjoy your trip and please let us know how it worked out for you. Paul

Here is the response from Aman Summer Palace regarding shark fin soup.....

Dear Mr and Mrs Ericka,

Thank you very much for your email and your concern about shark fin soup.

We would like to share with you that we do not display shark fin soup in our menus nor do we support its consumption. In the spirit of Amanresorts, we strongly discourage its promotion.

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you at the Aman at Summer Palace in the near future. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if I can be of any assistance.

Kind regards,

Mark Swinton
General Manager
Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing

I'm staying at Amangiri next week, and I'm looking forward to the experience.
This is my first stay at an Aman property. Wanted to ask the Aman-junkies for insight on how to maximize enjoyment at Amangiri. Wasn't sure if there were any unknown or under the radar aspects that most folks wouldn't even think to ask for, etc.
