Oops! I meant to say The Fleming, not The Pottinger (though I am looking at The Pottinger for another staycation too). Will certainly be in touch, thanks!

Incredible travel schedule btw!
My favorite ryokan in Kyoto is Shiraume. Great location over looking the Gion steam. Beautiful rooms, and most importantly amazing in-house cuisine. My husband thought the quality of food there surpassed our meal at Kikunoi.

I will look into it. I have read that some of the top end ryokans are difficult to book if you don't speak Japanese. Hopefully that's not the case here? Thanks!

The owner as well as the helper ladies all spoke English very well. We had contacted the ryokan via e-mail in English prior to booking, their speedy and helpful responses really put us at ease.

I haven't stayed at Tawaraya, so can't comment on the room&board. But location-wise, Tawaraya is on a much quieter and residential block further away from the main sites, whereas Shiraume is in the middle of beautiful but touristy Gion closer to the big temples, restaurants and shopping.

Speaking of changing plans...Was planning to go to Aman Kyoto in Nov. but not sure I can stay more than 2 nights at these rates. Might have to split between Aman and FS. Below is a small sample period as I'm helping a client for those dates (so there could be 150,000 JPY nights for all I know) but WOW!! I guess all suites but still very high barrier to entry. On the bright side, these rates will certainly discourage many of the younger Instagrammers

But my main purpose for this visit is to review the new Aman Kyoto as it will be new and would love to see how it stacks up against the FS and RC (for hobby and professional reasons).
Stayed at the RC before and it's great, too. Aman and FS are more to my personal taste but this RC is actually very good, perhaps the only RC I've really enjoyed. Ever.

This is interesting. I understand that some may not like the decor/classic feel do some properties, but I feel that Ritz-Carlton isn’t all too loved on this forum. You aren’t the first person to express that you haven’t enjoyed most RC.
Apart from most of the urban US properties, I enjoy RC a lot.
These are all the RC properties I enjoyed and would return to:
Hong Kong
Shanghai Pudong
Kyoto
Tokyo (but there are better hotels in the city so I won’t return)
Hôtel de la Paix (Geneva)
Rancho Mirage
Laguna Niguel
Santa Barbara
Half Moon Bay
Lake Tahoe
Bal Harbour, Miami
New Orleans
Dove Mountain
There are another dozen+ properties I’ve stayed at that I wouldn’t return to, but for the most part I’ve have great experiences with the brand.

Added a quick trip from Paris in July, need suggestions for Colmar (Maison des Tetes?) and Lucerne (Schweizerhof, The Hotel or Grand National?), then driving to Liechtenstein for an afternoon before returning to the Dolder Grand in Zurich.
