Your UA flight from the US will not arrive at A20 or A22. UA seems to be unable to distinguish between A and Z gates. Although A20 and Z20 use the same parking position if you arrive from the US you will enter the terminal on Z (non-Schengen) level, i.e. gate Z20. A13-A18 gates are one level down (below Z13-Z18) and you will have to go through passport control and go downstairs to get there from Z20-Z22.

My son is going on a school trip. 50 people. They are flying FCO-FRA-IAD; arriving FrA at 1205 and departing to IAD at 1255… technically a legal connection. However….
1) chances of a bus gate? I checked an earlier flight this week and it arrived at A28.
2) exit passport control correct for Schengen to Non Schengen?
3) additional security checks for US bound flights?
having transited FRA many times in C/F I would hesitate to book this connection… this seems like a recipe for disaster to me? Are there any transfer services available to groups? I have raised my concern to the school and they seem to think it’ll be ok….

I'm arriving via train to FRA the night before an early morning flight from T2.
My hotel and transportation choices will depend on whether the SkyLine train operates or if I'd have to take the bus from T1 to T2.
My options are:
- Arrive via DB ICE train, walk to T1, and take the hotel transfer bus to a hotel in the Gateway Gardens area. In the morning I'd walk to T2.
- Arrive via DB ICE train and stay at the Sheraton. In the morning I'd walk to T1 and take the SkyLine train or terminal transfer bus to T2.
- Arrive via the S-bahn and walk from the Gateway Gardens S-bahn station to the hotel. In the morning I'd walk to T2.
I wouldn't expect there to be huge amounts of people in the morning (my flight leaves at 06:30) leading to crowded buses, but I'd still prefer the SkyLine train over a terminal transfer bus.

Since the Skyline platforms for T1B and T2 are both outside security the fact the Skyline is unclean doesn’t matter as you only need to clear security once in T2.
Depending on which hotel you’ll be staying at, walking from Gateway Gardens to T2 might be quicker.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Most likely they will make it unless their incoming flight is late. LH will hold the departure of the IAD flight to accommodate the missing 50 pax.
Exit Schengen passport checks is no issue.

How is it not an issue? It takes a while to check and stamp passports for 50 people, especially so before the US bank of departures at FRA.
LH will either have to hold the flight and/or send a separate bus for them in case of a bus gate.

You don't get a stamp when exiting Schengen (not as EU citizens). It is fairly quickly done in my experience, 2-5 min.

50 times 2-5 min is still a long time, plus US entry check. However, as others have said they will probably hold the flight rather than re-accommodate 50 passengers on another flight.

My experience with US departures from FRA is a bit rusty but the add. US screening /entry checks takes place at/before the gate at FRA, right? If 50 pax turn up for US checks at the gate, it is almost certain that the gate will not get closed before the last pax in the group has boarded.

LH conducts checks at the bottleneck before Z50
The OP didn't mention who is operating the FRA-IAD segment, but a 12:55 departure is probably LH418.

If you are staying near Gateway Gardens the S-Bahn train is much more convenient than a hotel shuttle. I have posted some info in the Hilton forum.

I have booked the Hampton in the Gateway Gardens area, and I also have a booking at the Sheraton between the long-distance train station and T1.
Just need to decide which one to use...
It pretty much comes down to what I prefer to do in the morning, walk from the Hilton to T2 with two roller bags that each will weigh close to 23 kg, or stay at the Sheraton and take the SkyLine (starts operating at 5 am) or a transfer bus to T2. My flight leaves at 06:35 and I need to be checked in by 05:35 (flying BA).
My original train schedule (ICE nonstop from my departure point to FRA) has been changed because of train cancellations, so I'll have to change trains somewhere on my way to FRA.
Either it'll be ICE + ICE to the long-distance train station or ICE + S-bahn to Gateway Gardens, no real difference in time between the two (although changing from ICE to S-bahn at the Frankfurt main train station may require some extra walking).

Thanks for confirming as due to a gate change I’ve not been anywhere near it to check.

Hi guys, currently in transit in FRA and slightly confused as to how I’ve managed to not pass immigration.
Arrived Ex EDI on LH963. Originally planned for a B25 arrival, however there was a 90 min delay caused by snow at FRA and I’m assuming this is the likely reason for the change to arrival gate. We parked up on a remote stand and were bused, very efficiently, to a door labelled as A-EUW, passed through the door, up an escalator and out into gate A8. Slightly confused as I thought the A gates were all inside Schengen? Whereas EDI is mostly definitely non-Schengen. Followed signs for Z gates up an escalator and am now in the senator lounge opposite the corridor for Z50 to Z69. Unbelievably efficient transfer, just under 20 mins from arrival on bus gate to the lounge. Does A8 provide some sort of express channel for UK arrivals?
