Thanks - I'm more concerned with the outbound. There is one later flight to BIO (not BIL!) later in the day, assuming it wouldn't be full.

There is only one FRA-AUS direct per day, so if we miss the return connection, hopefully we could get put on a different route with UA - there are options that would go to EWR, DEN and a couple others and then on to AUS. Absolute worst case we get a night in Frankfurt to explore I guess.

LH just cancelled the resumption of the AUS for the rest of the year. I seriously doubt AUS will come back in early 2022.

Connection time

Just spent 50 minutes in passport line going Z to A gate. Do they help if you are within 30 minutes. Way back Salzburg to US via Frankfurt
worries me

What time of the day was this? Please do share your experience on the return!

I will have a similar connection in about 2 weeks. I'm wondering if I should book a longer connection by default rather than LH play pinball with a missed connection.

A to Z or Schengen to non.Schengen should be quicker than Z to A when a passenger’s eligibility to enter Schengen needs to be checked. However there is document check for passengers travelling to the US. No security check if travelling between EU/Schengen and US in either direction. Most TATL flights arrive in the morning hence a busy time for Z>A passport control. There is fast track security (by invitation) for passengers with a tight connection but no formal fast track passport control as far as I know.

Edited to add: Reading seanp7’s post below reminded me that there is a separate passport control queue for F and C passengers on departure but not on arrival.

I went from A to Z (US-bound flight) yesterday (a Saturday) in about 30 mins, arrived 8.50am, flight was at 10.45am. Pre-passport control checks were a shambles, but there is a First / Business desk on the right that you have to squeeze past people to get to. There's an agent verifying C/F eligibility, and this line was short (maybe 5 people deep when I went through). COVID Test, passport verified.

In the Economy line, at one point two agents announced EU passports could just come to the front. This caused confusion as Americans in line began to get frustrated and said they were boarding soon etc, but the agents processed the EU passports first to get those folks moving into the automated passport control gates.

The actual (manual, non-EU) passport control line moved well.

So I have separate tickets VCE-FRA // FRA-LAX

VCE flight arrives at 8am at 1 ASO. Have about a 2 hour connection. What's the fastest way to get to the First Class Terminal?

Thanks

I am relocating from the US to Italy for work in a couple of weeks and will be transiting through FRA (ORD --> FRA --> LIN) on Lufthansa business class. I needed at least a four hour layover to permit my two large dogs who are traveling as excess baggage to clear customs in the Lufthansa pet terminal, but will also have my cat with me as a hand luggage item.Given the long layover, it would be optimal to find an enclosed and quiet place where we could securely let the cat out of her travel bag for some water, a meal, and a bathroom break (which will require opening up a portable litter box for this purpose). I assume that the two human travelers will also want a shower, a drink, and a capable LH agent who can help confirm that our dogs arrived and are transiting safely. What's the best, lowest stress for all parties way to accomplish this? I've poked around a bit and seen a few options, including:
  1. LH senator or business lounge, letting cat briefly out in the private shower room (obviously she would stay in her travel case in any public area, but I'm not sure this would be inappropriate)
  2. springing for FRA VIP service and a private lounge (pricey, but flexible and avoids lugging our poor traumatized cat through the FRA labyrinth, but probably doesn't get us any extra coordination with LH pet terminal folks since it's not LH affiliated)
  3. going to a pet relief area and camping out there for an hour or two (this will mostly be dogs, which won't work for a cat, and if not indoors and extremely well secured would be unsafe. least comfortable option for human passengers)
Any input would be appreciated. I've never flown with pets and hope to never have to put one through it again. Many thanks.

That’s an easy one, you will arrive at A follow the exit signs, once outside turn left & you can see the building, follow the walkway past the taxis waiting to join the rank, cross the road & use the ground floor entrance & take elevator up. It’s 5 minutes from the A exit area.

I can’t really help, but I don’t believe there is a pet relief area anywhere in FRA.

If your dogs are booked to travel as checked baggage in the hold (AVIH, cost 380 Euros per crate), they will pass customs/agricultural inspection only in Milan, not in Frankfurt. You will not need to book a long layover. DON'T DO THAT.
Take the itinerary with the shortest layover possible (LH 431 followed by LH 272). You will have to do nothing at all in Frankfurt, the dogs will get transferred to the animal hotel during the layover and taken care of. They will also be just transferred to toe connecting flight without being processed by customs. That is your responsibility as soon as you arrive in Milan.
If you called LH and have received this advice from an agent, they were wrong and confused things.

For the cat, option1 (the lounge) is your only option. Everything else will require you to go landside with the cat, that means you 'll need different paperwork (German instead of Italian) etc. DON'T DO THAT. Animals need to stay in their carriers in the lounges. Letting it out in the securely locked bathroom is pretty much the only option you have.
Apart from that FRA doesn't have post-security pet relief areas at all, no cat would ever use one of these for its intended purpose.

edit:
If you already booked flights with the long layover (booking 280 instead of 272 will give you 5 hours) and cannot or do not want to change the itinerary:
- short-check the dogs to Frankfurt (you'd need to make this clear to the LH agent in ORD when checking in!), pass immigration/customs and collect them there (again, oversize baggage belt near where regular bags come out). Get the animal EU paperwork for Germany, not for Italy.
- Get a day room at the Steigenberger Airport hotel (EUR 79 plus maybe a 20 EUR pet fee), way better than paying for the private lounge) and take the shuttle bus there (5 mins). LH might let you leave the crates somewhere, ask the staff at the baggage office /check-in - check-in staff will also tell you when to be back for the LIN flight. One of you takes the dogs for a nice long walk (off-leash is fine ) in the Stadtwald directly behind the hotel , the other tends to the cat in the room. There's other hotels offering day rooms, but the Steigenberger has the most frequent shuttle and the forest starts right behind the building.
- take the shuttle bus back to the terminal to recheck the dogs in time for the connecting flight. As they should already be tagged and processed, it's fine to turn up there about 70 minutes prior to departure. All you need is to put them back in the crates and wait for them to be loaded on a cart at the check-in area before proceeding through security.

These photos are fairly old but I don't believe the area has changed much in recent years.

Advice needed. We will be traveling in Biz class on LH on a UA reward ticket: DEN-FRA-MAD with a 9 hour connection(transit) in FRA this weekend. We are US a passport holders. Lowly Silver status on UA. Suggestions or options in FRA? LH lounge? Option to buy a day pass somewhere else? Transit side hotel? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
