Anyone knows how passport/health control works at the Schengen A gates? Do arriving and departing passengers are just mixed and is there any control at the exit? I am transiting non-Shengen to Shengen on a long connection, but I want to exit to take the on-aiport COVID test. Would I face any obstacles (with an EU passport)?

I had substantial layovers and spent the time in the Senator Lounge on the Schengen side in A in both directions since it was the only conveniently located Senator Lounge that was open.

Just got back from a round trip non-Schengen to Schengen and back switching over in Frankfurt. The non-Schengen part was on UA using Z gates. The Schengen part was on LH using A gates. I have an EU passport and the switch was through and automated passport control system with two gates. You scan your passport at the first gate and it will open. Then I had to lower my mask so the system could take a picture of my face and that opened the second gate. Took about 30 seconds and there were no lines. Didn't have to go through security and there were no health controls. Same procedure in both directions. Having said that, I just stayed in the gate area and didn't really enter Germany. If you want to actually enter Germany there are very specific rules. There was a leaflet from the Federal Ministry of Health distributed on the LH flight to FRA entitled "Regulations for persons entering Germany in connection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2." It might be available on some website. I don't know what additional controls would be involved in going to the COVID test. I would guess it would be landside, right?

You are free to move around the airport, also go landside for the test. There is no one policing/enforcing the health aspect at this time.

If you mean a hotel in transit area where you can stay without entering Germany/Schengen, there is My Cloud Hotel near gate Z25. They are currently charging €254-269 per night for a single room.

Connect at FRA from non-Schengen into Schengen?
Hi, I'm trying to fly for this weekend a flight that would be YYZ - FRA - FCO. Air Canada - Lufthansa. It is only :55 min connection around 7am FRA time Sat. I am holding a Canadian passport.
Traditionally this would've been too tight for my comfort but during current times I'm imagining there is significantly less time to go through and process. Appreciate your thoughts.

Yes, a 55 min connection from B (where Air Canada flights arrive) to A (where FCO flights usually depart) is too tight for comfort especially since you will have to clear passport control and security. I believe longhaul passengers are still a proportion of the usual number so suggest you go through passport control in B, go through transfer security in B (just before you enter the public area) and walk through the tunnel to A.

What is the story with people arriving from Japan on an NH or JL flight and then transferring to a flight to Austria. NH is saying it cannot happen, yet the EU websites make it look acceptable. Any first hand knowledge?
