And if we do take the early flight, and I get upgraded to First Class, then at least I can use the First Class Terminal. I saw in another thread that First Class boarding card holders can take one guest and any family members traveling with them. If I read that correctly, would I be able to take both my wife and son with me to the FCT? I know the usual LH Lounge rules allow only one guest. Thank you for the help.
So if either you or your wife holds a First Class BP you can all visit the FCT and invite one other guest departing on the same flight as well!

Yes, you make a good point. Since this is an LH to LH connection, presumably they would hold the flight for people connecting from flights that are in the MCT range. I looked at LH 760 to DEL departures for the past few days, and they all left 10-20 min late, maybe because they were held for connections? I am fine going straight to the gate and not visiting the lounge, etc. But if we do miss the flight, the next (and only direct) flight to DEL is at 21:30, and on Air India (yikes!). Otherwise, have to wait until the next day, which is also not great.
But like NewbieRunner mentioned, I don't relish the stress of that potentially tight connection. Why would you expect/ hope to be upgraded to F ? Operational upgrades are based on FF Status so any HON or SEN is in front of you & the fare paid also counts.

As I read it the OP hopes to be able to apply some kind of upgrade instrument, hence the thoughts about visiting the F lounge first (you will not be able to do that with an op-upgr. as they are mostly received at the gate).

LH will only hold the flight IF it makes sense for LH, a flight can be ‘closed’ but only shows departing the airfield 10-20 minutes ‘late’ which is usually within the flights overall estimated length.

I don't expect the upgrade, of course, but hope to get it by using the Global Upgrade Certificates from United 1K FF status. I have used these on several occasions for upgrades to F flying to/from Germany and the US, South Africa, Argentina and India. You're right -- the certs are ranked below all LH HON or SEN members, so it is not a guarantee. But the past few times the upgrade cleared a day or two before the flight, so I was able to use the F lounge. If it only clears at the gate so that I am not able to use the lounge, then I am still happy anyway, since LH F class is quite enjoyable.
Hope your GUP clears for you, in which case & considering the route, I wouldn’t even contemplate the short connection

On the other hand, if it clears then LH will probably arrange RDS to allow OP in F and family to make their short connection.
All moot points in the end, as the OP needs to decide about flights now, and will only now about the GUC in best case a day before flying.
My advise: book the early flight as the early rise is worth the comfort of knowing that you will make your connection. If the upgrade clears, enjoy the FCL B, you will get a car to the C Gates from there, or the FCT as they will drive you to any gate from there.

I would, as 4 hours in a lounge, even one as good as the FCL or FCT isn’t worth a 4am wake up for me. I would not, as I would be more likely to make my connection than with the short one.

Thanks to everyone for the great input and suggestions. I ended up opting for the earlier departure out of AMS. But in a stroke of some good luck, my departure date moved to Friday, and the earlier flight leaves at 08:50 instead of 07:45, so I will get one extra hour of sleep! We'll see if the luck continues and the GUC clears for the move to F for the long flight.

OK NewbieRunner - where did I go wrong?
Connecting Sofia to Manchester.
I thought a one-hour transfer from Bulgaria to UK, EU non-Schengen to EU(just about) non-Schengen, would be a simple matter of walking between gates, even give me time for a coffee in the lounge.
But it was a remote stand, with a time-consuming passport check twixt plane and bus.
Then dropped at (for me) a novel arrival door. Entry to Germany on the right, two sets of escalators up to transfers to the left.
Then a dinky train ride to ABC gates, a long walk passing the day-beds, following the signs to B through immigration, through an un-manned customs post.
Another long walk until i cam to the bit I know well, the sharp left turn to (an alarmingly intrusive) security inspection and on to the passport check to exit Germany to get to B41.
The flight was late, I move quickly and im rude enough to ask people to make room to pass on escalators, so I made it: though without the coffee stop.
Now I'm sure I didn't have to enter and leave the Federal Republic, but I'm pretty good at following signs, and I kept to the B-gate track. Where did I go wrong ?
I asked the agents at the gate, they had a giggle and said after ten years or so, THEY get confused. But they thought maybe I should have gone through the tunnel. Confused they may have been, but i know someone will most definitely be able to tell me if i made a wrong turn. Over to you, NR!

That's very weird you entered and left Germany. Also I wonder how you got into the train... From where the A station is, the route to B should be marked via tunnel... at least it was when I passed through there about 2 years ago.

I’m not certain if you can get on the Skyline train instead of going through security at the top of the escalators but the Skyline train carriages are “unclean” so you will have to clear security again after you get off at the stop for B. There are some day-beds/reclining chairs between the Skyline platform for B and B transfer area but I cannot understand how you had to go through passport control there.
After all the Skyline train is there to allow passengers who need a visa to enter Germany to connect between terminals without having to enter Germany. Very strange.

From your description you seem to have arrived at ANS (A non-Schengen bus arrival gate.) I don’t know how you ended up entering Schengen unless you went down to A concourse after transfer security and passport control to walk through the tunnel to B.

IAN-UK somehow entered A concourse to go to the A platform, which is unclean Schengen (e.g. landside) That would explain how he ended up at transfer security + exit control to enter non-Schengen part of B pier.

I think you can enter Skytrain platform without passing security, but no going back. That would be the Z platform.
