I would partly disagree. Your father is not a Dr. med. but a Dr. med. habil., at least it reads as such in your quote. The habil indicates that he wrote did a "Habilitation" not just a normal thesis. Makes a huge difference.

AFAIK you can only hold a Dr. med. if you are a physician as the Dr. med. is linked to the "Staatsexamen". Even if you finished the thesis way before your "Staatsexamen" you are not allowed to use the title until you finished your "Staatsexamen".

You can also write write a thesis at a med. school if you are not a student/graduate of medicine but in this case you will hold a Dr. rer. med. once you finished the dissertation.
Or some University hand out a Dr. rer. physiol. for those.

In fact you do not greet somebody with Prof. Dr. Fendant. It is either Prof. Fendant or Dr. Fendant. AFAIK in Germany a Dr. title is in your passport, the Prof. title is not, same as in Austria, whereas Switzerland does not register titles in passports or ID cards.

It always amuses me, when a certain Mrs. Prof. Dr. is travelling with me.
I caution her not to show/use the title in Vienna airport fearing that we would miss our connecting flight.

Nope, I am persuaded that it's my stunning looks as raw masculine charm that did it....don't try to take that away from me

How to Address People

I will be flying LH F JFK-FRA. Since a few weeks I also got my PhD. Are the crew aware of my PhD status. Can I add my PhD status? I would like them to adress me as Herr Doktor and not as mister.

Try it on United first! Lh does not follow this title s...t.
You are only adressed as Herr Doktor on LH , if you bought or married one
But you have to divulge the price you paid in your profile

????

Of course they do. And so does UA.

Actually other than my pre-PhD day ride on AI, I do not recall a carrier that doesn't ... when they are aware of it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the only "doctor" the crew would care about is "doctor doctor", AKA medical doctor (M.D.), and only then if they actually needed some kind of help.

Maybe you should refuse the first class pyjamas and wear this shirt during your flight
