Anxious about MUC connection from Austrian to Air Dolomiti on UA award ticket
I'm considering booking a multi-city award ticket using United MileagePlus miles that would include a VIE-MUC-FLR routing on a Sunday evening in October. United is offering a VIE-MUC flight on Austrian Airlines, connecting to Air Dolomiti, with a 40-minute layover in MUC. I'm in no way impugning German or Austrian efficiency and reliability, but is that too close for comfort (especially given that on a Sunday night I'd risk missing the last flight of the day to FLR)?
Bonus question: which airline's baggage policy will apply?
Thanks in advance.

MUC is a very efficient airport. I'd put the likelihood of you making your connection well above 90%.

40 mins in MUC is doable. If the VIE-MUC is the originating flight on this ticket then OS bag rules apply. Award tickets have a free bag + any SAG or other extra allowance you may have

Munich Airport question
Hope this isn't a stupid question, but here goes...
My study abroad kid is finally coming home this weekend - yay! He is flying on LH, CPH-MUC-IAD and has a tight connection in Munich (55 minutes). I've heard that Munich is a pretty efficient airport, but it's not one that I've ever been to so it's not familiar to me. It appears that his flight from CPH comes in to G gates and his departing flight to IAD goes from L gates; same terminal but on the map it appears that they are separate buildings. Can anyone shed some light on how one gets to the L gates building? Is there a shuttle? And will he need to go through any additional screening? Any advice that I can pass along to him would be welcomed , as I know that he will be rushing and it would be good for him to have some clue as to where to go
Thanks!

Several times I was flying through MUC to BOS with 40-45 minutes connection time - no problems there (once because my firs leg was delayed I had only about 20 minutes to transfer - me and my checkin baggage made it in time). If CPH-MUC won't be delayed too much he will get to the gate in time. He is arriving in the main terminal 2 (G gates) and he will have to transfer to satellite terminal 2 (L gates) - there is underground train going between terminals every 4 minutes (or something like that). The signs to gates L are also very easy to notice - generally speaking Munich airport is very easy for transfers. Last time I was there, there was personnel from airport at the train stop ready to answer any questions and show directions. And as with the flights to US, he will have to go through one more passport check and may be chosen for additional extended security check. Btw. recently I noticed that Lufthansa application for mobile phones guides you through airport - it shows you the map and where you should go to get to your gate. For connecting flight its starts at the check in area but you can change starting point for any gate you want. I hope that this will help.

Non-Schengen transfer at MUC Terminal 1, on separate tickets
What is the deal with transfer at Munich Terminal 1 from one non-Shengen flight to another when traveling on separate tickets?
It seems that theoretical possibility exists, as there is a special glass corridor, and even signs pointing to the gates. But when trying to follow the signs (I did this past Friday and then again on Monday), eventually one encounters a closed door.
I guess it is easier when flying on the same ticket. I did see passengers transferring from AA to El Al met and put on the bus right at the gate, even before entering the main terminal building. But for those traveling on separate tickets, is entering Germany and then going through all the formalities to get back the only way?

Hi,
if you scroll down the airport's transit page, you can see that they recommend at least 45 minutes layover when switching between Terminal 1 and 2.
There is a shuttle which runs every 15 minutes.
As your kid arrives from a Schengen-area flight and heads for a non-Schengen destination, it will have to get checked.

Thanks, @noname83. So - is it an underground rail system? Moving sidewalk? Shuttle bus? Either way, it sounds like he won't have a problem making his flight (assuming CPH-MUC arrives on time)....I hope!

So he just has to move up one level from 04(K) to 05(L) on the escalator or lift (right at the finger in a sealed area), go through passport control as he is leaving the EU to enter NON-Schengen and then through the special US checks area at L23-L30
If he arrives at T2, there is only the automated underground train between T2 and T2S.

Non Schengen to Non Schengen, ESPECIALLY when you cant go Schengen isnt really fun on two tickets. Imagine something going wrong.. delay on the first flight.. staff somehow unable to check through baggage. Second flight massively delayed/cancelled.
In some scenarios you basically COULDNT by law stay in Non Schengen zone and since on two tickets they might blame you for it.. transport you back to the country you came from etc (forcing the airline that got you there)
Nope. If not allowed into Schengen zone, I would NEVER book a seperate Non Schengen transit on two tickets..

An oddball booking here. Flying ARN-MUC-SPU tomorrow on SAS and and Croatia Airlines with a 40 minute connection in Munich. Will my bags make it on time for the connecting flight, despite the short connection? And also in case they miss loading the bags, there's a Lufthansa flight leaving an hour later, are they usually quick to put them on the next available flight? I wouldn't want to spend 8 hours at Split Airport waiting for the bags to show up.
