The LH/OS special Meal FAQ thread

Since the special meals served on LH are topic of many threads, I thought I post the details I found here for further discussion and refinement:

Special meals

On Lufthansa long-haul flights and short-haul flights with a flight duration of more than 95 minutes passengers of all classes can book special meals. The confirmation for a meal requests (except SPML) will be given automatically. For flights where no special meals are available the CRS instantly replies with -UC-. All service levels are implemented in the CRS-inventory.

Note: Deadline for confirmation is 24hrs prior departure. On domestic and service type "a" flights spec/meals will not be offered.
Please do not book/request special meals when flights are not yet confirmed.

Reservation of special meals
Special meals must be reserved through LH sales offices. The table below shows the reservation process:
Stage Description
1 The passenger requests a special meal at an LH sales office.
2 The sales agent books the meal using the AIRIMP meal code.
3 A confirmation is given automatically and placed on Queue 1 category 6.
Note: The confirmation deadline is 24 hours prior to departure.
4 A -KK- reply is given upon Amadeus PNR creation.
5 A telex is sent to departure stations other than FRA.
Reference: Please refer to AMADEUS using the input GGAIR LH RESPROC for further information on how to reserve special meals.

Telex messages
The following guidelines apply to telex messages sent with special meal requests:
Departure point: FRA A SITA telex must be sent to FRA ZD LH.
Departure point: All German stations except FRA A SITA telex must be sent to ...ZF LH (... = departure station).
Departure point: Stations outside Germany A telex must be sent to the appropriate LH station: ... ST LH (... = departure station).

Reservation restrictions
For special meal reservations the following restrictions apply:

Business Class:
Special meals cannot be reserved on flights with a block time less than 65 minutes.

Economy Class:
Special meals cannot be reserved on flights with a block time less than 185 minutes.

Meals cannot be reserved with unconfirmed reservations.

Meal Codes

To book a special meal please apply the following IATA codes:

AVML Vegetarian asiatic(indian) without beef/veal, fish, cooked and seasoned indian style
BBML Baby food. Note: baby food from Hipp and longlife/milk on all international flights available

CHML Child/junior meal
DBML Diabetic meal special meal for diabetes no sugar, low fat, no breaded products, non alcoholic
FPML Fruit meal with fruits, raw, fresh, whole food, without meat (RVML)
GFML Gluten-free meal, meal for those allergic
HFML High fibre meal meal with high nutritious value, fresh basis products
HNML Hindu style meal without beef, pork, veal, cooked and seasoned indian style
JPML Japanese meal, only on LH flights to and from Japan, request only in F & C class

LCML Low calory meal meal with reduced calories, plenty of roughage, low in fat and carbohydrates
LFML Low cholesterol meal special meal for metabolic diseases - less than 100mg cholesterol/meal, no animal fats, no egg yolk
LPML Meal with low protein and low sodium for sickness of liver

SFML Seafood meal mainly of fish, shellfish and crustaceans; no meat
SPML See note
VGML Pure vegetarian meal (vegan) no meat or fish products non-alcoholic, fresh food
VLML Vegetarian meal (lacto-ovo) dairy prod. and eggs allowed

Note for SPML (followed by free text): Please use only AIRIMP-defined mealcodes as stated before. An instant KK-reply is given up to 24 hrs prior departure on all Lufthansa-operated flights after PNR creation.

The special code SPML for "special meal" can only be applied if no other meal code can match the requirement of the customer. These are exempt cases, such as guests with rare allergies.

Problems:

Waitlists: if the pax is on a HL status and waitlisted for another flight, the SPML has to be reentered when there is a confirmation of the waitlist.

Rebooking: if one segment is rebooked (even if different fare class on the same flight) SPML has to be reentered

Upgrades: if the upgrade is done less than 24h in advance, SPML cannot be entered.

You can see any class/meal combination here - only problem is that Economy and Business classes are mixed up, so if you want to see C class meal choose economy and vice versa.

aha! but can you now please identify the appetizer on the business long haul veg meal - which nobody can identify for me but is always some kind of mixed plate with very cold orange item (maybe yam?)

I think that I am going to request Asian veg next time to see if at least I can identify the food put before me.

Which airline has the most selection of special Meal ? It seams for me, that LH offers more then OS.

I have had the low fat and diabetic meals on LH. Both of them had a weird-looking green vegetable that looked a cross between broccoli and a space alien. Anyone know what it is? Didn't touch it.

What gets me the most is what many airlines substitute for bread on a DBML. Most times I am unable to identify it and it looks and tastes revolting. I always insist on grabbing real bread from the regular bread basket.
I have no idea why LH nutritionists think DBMLs shouldn't contain bread. On the contrary a regular intake of slow carbs is essential for us. On top of that LH bread is nearly all whole-grain bread, which in calculated amounts is an essential ingredient for a DB.

OS offers a good bread selection on board. You know, what you will get and you can identify it. Also tastes well.

My recommendation (for SENs) on short-haul flights in C: Order the fruitmeal. Much better than anything else & if you are hungry, get a "Leberkäs" in FRA or MUC. LH has an outstanding selection of 3 (!) different standard meals since last year (Cesar's Salad, the mexican version with some bird's leg, and melons'n'smoked ham) and they haven't changed it ever since.

I've tried that as well. The funny thing is that they don't really care about the "no sugar" - the dessert is usually the normal one or they put the usual chocolate items there... very thoughtful for Diabetics ;-)

It's not so great anymore when you get it for the 15th+ time... ;) I hope I am not alone in thinking that LH should definitely change it's C class shorthaul menu more frequently.
