The Definitive PAYBACK Thread

There have been many threads about earning Payback points. Since Payback points can be easily converted to Lufthansa Miles&More in 1:1 ratio, I'd like to start this thread, dedicated to Payback problematics.

Please post all Payback-related news here. Thanks and happy collecting :D

LH stopped all possiblities of selling Miles incl. Payback

"Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie nur Ihre persönliche, gültige und aktuelle Miles & More Kartennummer für die Umwandlung Ihrer PAYBACK Punkte angeben dürfen. Anderenfalls werden Ihre PAYBACK Punkte automatisch auf Ihr Punktekonto zurückgebucht."

That means:

Lufthansa did not only make PAYBACK to stop transferring PUNKTE between their accounts,

but also transferring PUNKTE to other peoples MILES&MORE accounts.

Conclusion: Seems like if Lufthansa has stopped all possibilies of selling miles including the PAYBACK thing...

Or does anybody have an idea?

oliver2002 Aug 30, 2004 5:42 am

This rule was always there! Nothing new.

peter42 Aug 30, 2004 7:15 am

Obviously LH can change Payback in any way they want as they own 50% of it...

double miles in August(?)

hi friends,

what about those 2x miles in august if you use at least 3 partners - as stated on the M&M site? There is no info on the payback site! anyone getting them? i got 5x during the promotion week, but back to normal these days.

In my opinion the payback site is very cautious around with the miles. One has to follow every transation closely, very tirying! :td:

i tried to get amazon.de buys to get miles thru the payback shoppingguide.. didnt work - anybody knows if this is still working? the website does...

I bought some things a herrenausstatter.de and mexx.com and never get the promised points (3 P per 1 EUR). I called them several times, but the points never show up in my payback account. I have given it up now and probably will not buy to collect points.

By the way, to me, it seems better to get the points in EUR (100 P = 1 EUR) than in miles. In my eyes, this is a better deal (if you live in Germany or have an German bank account).

well, ebay was a much better deal , cause you did get about 2 EUR per 100 points...
it all depends for what you can use your miles for: if you end up dumping them on buch.de for .3 cent a mile, dont change payback points into miles. If you have to book some Y,C.... tickets (cause you need to go somewhere on a weekday and return the next day.. or upgradable fares or like to travel to odd destinations like Lebanon or Eritrea where there is never any sale) you can definitively get more of your miles than 1 cent per mile..
Since Aug. 1st it ist clear that M&M doesnt really care about people who buy mostly cheap leasure fares that are competitive with LCCs anyway...

Opodo is 300 per booking. I made my hotelbookings last week for the rest of this year on Opodo and Expdia and each booking earned me 1500 Opodo / 1250 Expedia points.
Those points will be however blocked until I really paied my stay at the hotel otherwise they will cancel the points according to the cancelled bookings.

I never had problems not getting points with Payback. If you shop online you only need to make sure that you connect to the partnershop via the Payback website.

Miles for books

1.) I am ordering my books at buch.de and the mile transfer is quick and prompt nearly after you hve paid the bill.

Rate is 1 EURO ==> 1 Lufthansa miles (you need no transfer through PAYBACK)

Not related to books but to all PAYBACK POINTS
2.) PAYBACK points:
can be transferred to your personal miles and more account not only in 1.500 point increments but in every amount you want, e.g. 1502 point, 2288 points or whatever you need.

wwflyer Sep 11, 2004 10:26 am

Payback Points deleted for transactions at www.otto.de!!!

Looking today in my Payback Account was a shook! :(
During the Olympia Promotion you did get at www.otto.de 1500 points per transaction. So I decided to buy several times at www.otto.de and everything seemed to be O.K. because one day later I got all the points for each transaction. Not a bad value. Buying stuff between 1,29€ - 3€ and getting 1500 Points (=1500 Miles). So I did quite alot transactions and no problem so far. I was quite happy getting so many miles. :p
Because you are allowed to give back your purchased products within 14 days without any consequence the points are blocked until the transaction is completly fullfilled.
But today they just took away my Payback Points!!!
As you can imagine I did not hesitate to call the Payback Hotline.
The Payback Hotline told me to call the Otto Hotline.
The normal Otto Hotline gave me a phone number for the Otto Internet Service.
The Otto Internet Serive told me to call Payback because they manage the points and in her Internet Service Hotline Guideline ist written that all complaints for not getting points etc. has to be transferred to the Payback Hotline.
So I gave the Payback Hotline another try... This time I did get a nice person who told me that she privately herself has the same problem and will transfer me directly to the people in charge for the Paypack Shops. There I told the story again and after a while with the wonderful music on the phone somebody told me that I will get my points. Due to the fact, that alot of people have done this trick, they reduced the possibility to get points at www.otto.de to three transactions a month.

But as I bought the stuff before the restriction applied, I will get the points within the next two weeks.
Hopefully they will keep their promise...

The points didn´t show up till now and so I called today Payback. First, I was surprised that I was not able to find the telephone number of Payback on the internet site but I remembered that it was written on my card. (Serviceline 01805105111 - pro minute 0,12 €) Calling the number was not very useful because you do not have the choice to get somebody to speak to. By trying out all possibilities I managed to get the following number as service hotline: 0190 510 500 with costs of 0,62 € per minute. :td: After being transfered from one person to the other I was speaking to somebody in charge of the Payback online shops. He was very rude. Nearly shouting at me that Payback only manages the points and is not responsible for complaints. He said Otto is responsible and than suddenly he finished the phone call with out any comment. By the way, they have a profile of every memeber in the computer in front of them, and they do know everything... After this very unfriendly phone call I phoned up Otto and they conneceted me to the legal department of Otto. A person very friendly told me that Otto and Payback do not have any contract yet. Payback is in charge of everything and tries to convince Otto to make a contract and everything is in a test phase. Does anybody have similiar experiences with Payback? I do not mind not getting some Points/Miles but it is the way how I was treated. If companies promise points/miles they do have to keep their promise. I am considering to bring the case to court. Does anybody have some ideas which law has to be used in this case? Gesetz gegen unlauteren Wettbewerb, Kartellgesetz, Preisangabenverordnung? I do not have a clue! Any suggestions what to do?

Anyway, DON´T TRUST PAYBACK and be careful with every transaction you make. Be aware all the time that your points/miles at Payback can be taken away without a reason!!!!!!!!!

W Nippert Oct 1, 2004 12:48 am

[QUOTE=Winglet]I do not mind not getting some Points/Miles but it is the way how I was treated.

Welcome to "Service-Wüste Deutschland", the real low-level-consumer-world ... This is how in Germany customers are used to be treated...

hardhat Oct 1, 2004 3:32 am

Payback uses the normal Zanox (www.zanox.de) Affiliate programs.
For example: You get different commissions from opodo. The amount depends on what you sell (flight, lastminute travels, rental car ect.). So what Payback does is they give you a part of the commission in Payback points.

So Otto is not the one to blame. They are not in the position to credit your points.
Some idiot a Payback came up with this promotion and did not waste any time to think it through. S*** like that I experience very single day in my job. The good thing about your complaints is that he/she might get his/her a** kicked.

Using companies mistakes to get some miles is okay for me if it goes though. But on the other hand if it does not: That’s it, it was worth a try. All the nonsense about taking it to court: Yes, this is an issue our courts should waste time with.
If you honest it is only about your hurt feelings. I also hate it, if I think I made a smart move and it does not work out ;) .

Just to make it clear you are right and Payback is wrong. But how far should one take it.

Regarding the comment from W Nippert: Service-Wüste-Deutschland what a bull**** customers are so highly protected by the law. Companies even have to pay for customers stupidity see the Fernabsatzgesetzt. We get 2 years of Gewehrleistung. Now take the low prices we pay for most products compeered the similar countries and than rethink it again. How does it woke in the Ukraine or in the US  ?

The only problem in Germany is the friendliness. It is mostly how you say it, not what you say (see treatment Winglet got when he called Payback). This is because lots of people have the feeling the have to work to much for to little money. This makes them unfriendly when they have to serve. On the other hand the German customer can be pretty unfriendly as well. He/She expects friendliness when he/she spends his/her hard earned money. Expecting a standard from others which you can not reach yourself does not woke out.

oliver2002 Oct 4, 2004 1:54 am

Write a nice letter with your problem and how you would like to get it solved. Send it to the official payback address and ask them to contact you if they have any questions.

Calling up makes no sense. A letter always has to be answered and is documenting the screw up somebody at payback made.

The only problem in Germany is the friendliness.

Sorry to reply that late - having been away - , but I just have to:

It´s not about consumer protection, it is about ATTITUDE, not (only) friendliness. Simply a mentality thing. To give you the message: Take for example road construction:

Germany: Big sign: "We are building a new Autobahn FOR YOU" ("WIR bauen für SIE")
UK: Sign "Road construction ahead. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused to you".
Ukraine: Just road works done. No sign.

In Germany a customer is on many occasions made to feel guilty or to feel sorry. They even don´t bother to give you (psychologically) some "good feeling". When the original poster complained about missing points, it would have been right to give him the feeling that the problem (1) has been recognized and (2) that SOMEONE is sorting it out (Otto togehter with Payback) - and actually arranging for a solution . That hasn´t been done, and they prooved that neither of them is able to do it...
