Austrian to modernize its Longhaul fleet with 10 B789 in 2024-28

https://www.austrianairlines.ag/en/2...-9-dreamliner/

First delivery next summer:

The arrival of ten Boeing 787-9 – an aircraft of the newest generation of technology – will spur the modernisation and growth of the Austrian Airlines long-haul fleet. The first ‘Dreamliner’ will be landing beginning 2024 in Vienna and will expand the flag carrier’s fleet to 66 aircraft already during the summer flight schedule 2024. Expected by 2028, nine additional Boeing 787-9 will replace the current long-haul jets of the 777 and 767 family. The ‘Dreamliner’ will be transferred gradually from Lufthansa Airlines respectively from existing orders of the Lufthansa Group. This will result in a significant rejuvenation of the Austrian Airlines’ fleet.

Aerotelegraph found out that the 5 ex HU B789 will move from LH to OS in the first step as LH receives their Allegris B789 starting late 2023.

Presumably because the smaller J cabins are more suited to OS than mainline LH?

Excellent news as the 787-9 should provide the right sized aircraft for OS, and the 767s and 777s have had a full life with Lauda and then Austrian and are now ready for retirement. OS has in my mind the best food service of any *A airline across the Atlantic and I go out of my way to fly them. Now with new aircraft and Allegris seats, their hard product will also improve significantly. I cannot wait to fly the OS 787 in business class, especially with chef returning this year!

Could be. The C cabin in the ex HU B789 is pretty small for LH standards.

excellent news yes, and definitely an improvement, but those ex-HU birds won’t have the Allegris cabin and won’t get it. They will only have Allegris on the 5 new birds delivered from 2026-2028.

Good point. I suppose from a selfish standpoint I am happy they are getting the ex-HU birds if that means I don't have to wait until 2026 to ride on an OS 787!

I don't expect anyone to know at this time, but it'd be interesting to know if they'll offer "throne seats."
While I enjoy the overall experience flying on the B767, the lack of throne seats is a clear disadvantage compared to the B777.

They will have the OS branded version of the LH Allegris cabin, which will show for the first time in a Lufthansa B789 sometime at the end of 2023.

But you can see it in pictures on this forum and also on Swiss subforum if you google Swiss Sense (but not in 787, for Swiss).

Size of cabin will probably vary between airlines.

The first batch will have the Hainan cabin which is reverese-herringbone 1-2-1 so no thrones applicable.

About time, seems like the 767s keep having minor problems often these months

As those ex-HU birds are aimed to stay long term with OS they will eventually get the OS version of Allegris, the question is only if they will be upgraded before joining the OS fleet or at a later stage during a major Maintenance Overhaul in the next 2-3 years.

Something just occurred to me, but one of the biggest issues with the current 777 and 767 fleet that OS is running, is the lack of WiFi. With this transition, will OS finally have WiFi on their long haul routes?

very likely, since they already offer it on part of their smaller fleet

the ex-HU cabin is still fairly new, so at best I would expect those birds to the the Allegris cabin at the very end of the refit queue, once all other LH/LX aircraft have been completed. I hope I'm wrong though!
