How does Miles&More deal with cancellations due to government travel warnings? Fee?

We have used M&M miles to book a Condor flight to the Canary islands. Now, recently the German government has declared this destination as a risk area and is officially warning to travel there. We are not afraid but due to the consequences upon returning (e.g. quarantaine) we can not travel there anymore and need therefore to cancel these tickets (or rebook to another destination but then not on Condor but LHG airlines).
Will the M&M service team do this without the normal € 50 change fee? Can it be done online? Anybody had experiences with this before? Thanks

Call M&M and ask to cancel the reservation due to the travel warning issued by the German government.

Thanks. Does that mean that they are waiving the fees in such cases?

Not necessary. There is a concept you have to understand - a warning or travel alert is to warn its citizens not to go certain countries. However, it DOES NOT preclude the airline from operating flight to the areas subject to the warning.

For a official warning to be a fee-waiving cancellation opportunity, the airline will issue a waiver matching to the government's warning. In other word, the ability for a no-fee cancellation comes from the waiver, not the warning itself.

So here is what happened: the agent insisted that as long as the airline is operating the flight i.e. not cancelling the flight, the normal conditions and fees apply. That there is an official travel warning does not really interest them. As the fee is a fixed 50€ per PNR the agent recommended to wait to the last day before departure and see if in the meanwhile the flight might have been cancelled by Condor anyway (then we would be entitled to a full refund with no fee). That is what we will do now: Tell them one day before departure to cancel. What a stupid policy - instead of accepting cancellations and possibly adjust flights e.g. ccombine them for less passengers they will fly with empty seats just for 50 €

Did you attempt to contact Condor directly? Maybe they are willing to take control of the ticket and at least rebook you to a new date next year or whatever.

You basically told them they can sell your seats. Won't be surprised if their software flags your reservation with this information.

I really doubt it, considering the really lose connection of DE to M&M. M&M is a full subsidiary of LH group. Condor is basically nothing but a minor (tertiary) redemption partner.

So, basically, revenue tickets can be changed for free but award tickets will be charged with the 50€ fee, should one decide to change the dates??

Correct. Unless flights have been cancelled by the airline.

It depends on the airline operating the flights (and issuing the award ticket:

As I read it, the OP sought to change the destination, too.

Yes, thanks. As the airline (DE=Condor) is not LH Group member you have to pay the € 50 anyway - unless they would cancel the flights from their side. Can not be rebooked free of charge to another LH Group airline.
