All the changes are listed on the official M&M Website: https://www.miles-and-more.com/de/en...ts/update.html

Starting 2021, the system for earning status changes. From then on, status points are earned by cabin and segment flown:

Regional flights will earn 5 points in Economy and Premium Economy, 10 points in First and Business class per segment
Intercontinental flights, ie flights between two IATA regions, will earn 15 points in Economy, 20 in Premium Economy, 50 in Business and 70 in First class segments

There will be two kinds of points : qualifying points (QP): earned with M&M integrated partners (LH/EW/LX/OS/LO/OU/LG/etc) and normal points : earned with other partners like the airlines in the Star Alliance. QP can be earned on LH Airrail train segments, but are capped at 40/120/250 per year for FTL/SEN/HON.

'Frequent Traveler' (FTL, equivalent to *S) status is given to members with 160 points (of which atleast 80 need to be QP), 'Senator' (SEN, *G) to members with 480 points (of which atleast 240 need to be QP). HON Circle (HON) is awarded after reaching 1500 QP in one year.

SEN will receive two evouchers upon qualification each year, HON 4 evouchers. There will be no rollover of QP, but for members who exceed the qualification QP level, M&M will grant the following benefits:
FTL: Mileage exchange for QP at 200 qualifying points
SEN: 2 eVoucher at 700 qualifying points; 15,000 award miles at 1,000 qualifying points; Frequent Traveller partner card at 1,300 qualifying points
HON:2 eVoucher at 1,800 qualifying points; 30,000 award miles at 2,100 qualifying points; 2 eVoucher at 2,400 qualifying points; Frequent Traveller partner card at 2,700 qualifying points; Senator partner card at 3,000 qualifying points

The system of status miles, HON Circle miles, select miles, and status star points will be abolished at the end of 2020. Any status earned prior to that will be honored. Any HON Circle miles earned in 2020 will be credited as QP in the ratio 200:1. Status star points earned till end of 2020 will converted to lifetime QP at a ration of 2:1.

Members with a lifetime QP of 7500 will be awarded FTL for their lifetime. If members reach 10000 lifetime QP and have been SEN for at least a cumulative 10 years they will be awarded lifetime SEN status.

Status is always valid for the year of qualification and one additional year. HON and SEN will have a 'soft landing' ie if they cannot requalify for status, they will get a year of SEN or FTL respectively.

Interesting. So YTD I have 340K HON Circle Miles.
Under the new system from the news article above, I would have 1410 QP.
I do still have another F trip coming, plus European trips.

With my flying pattern I would still comfortably qualify HON, but probably not over-qualify by as much as I do now (I'll finish this 2 year period with >850K HON miles, same as last time).

People are too lazy and rather pay 100€/year for an Alexander Koenig newsletter or pay a consultant 300€ to get the status run built into the next vacation. Such is life.

Wait till "K,L,T" excluded
This is likely. However, this will create headaches for corporate booking agents/tools.
LH frequent flyer instructing them not to book K, L, T. But in Concur it might be even not possible to see the fare class.

I'm just not sure that the behaviors they're trying to discourage meaningfully (if at all) offset revenue loss/gain the behaviors the new system is designed to encourage. From what I can tell, it seems more easily manipulable than previously.

Maybe simplification really was the goal (assuming the fine print/T&Cs arent over 5 pages long)...

The question is, which status benefits will get lost - 2021 and later. Especially the HON in 2021 could be a different - less attractive - status than the HON is now. Same for the SEN. That is a consequence of quantity over quality.

That would sure clear out the FTL lounges. It seems unlikely they would double the requirements on the present rules and then say none of the former classes are eligible thereby increasing spend a further 1-2x.

I’d be curious to hear how they foresee that the total status population & its tier spread will change with this.
  • Fewer status holders would sound contradicting to wanting more loyal customers.
  • Same number of status holders would mean either aiming for a different profile of travelers, or change for change’s sake.
  • More status holders and some locations (lounges) will become even more overcrowded than today.

Yes there are good P & A deals out there, but not everyone flies to KBP to fly a cheap fare.
same amount of flying for the same amount of money gives you 1 year of SENhood instead of 2, do I understand that correctly? This might be the main catch - it may seem easier to qualify as discussed in the thread already, but one only gets half the duration of the status attained. Kind of makes sense.
Wonder what the impact on FCL/FCT population numbers will be...

+1 I think that's a very relevant question to ask
What do they expect to happen with this change and what type of customer behavior, are they thinking, it will drive?

LH Miles & More will become the Mileage Run paradise, since achieving status is not based on spending/revenue but segments taken. Esp. each longhaul segment in Business Class brings you 10% and a bit closer to SEN status.

Although I am quite skeptical with the changes they might want to attract more people to M & M programme. It’s not secret that you can get easily gold with BA and within Star Alliance with Aegean and Turkish. It wouldn’t surprise me if you need to spend 5k to become senator. You need much less to become Gold with BA or another star alliance carrier. Last, unfortunately we have seen lately that LH is following BA path when it comes to extra charges such as selection of seats in PE or downgrade the food in both PE and Y. Let’s wait and see.

This is no different than flying blue today:

https://www.flyingblue.de/en/programme#xp

Flying Blue gives Gold for 280 pts, and Platinum for 580 pts (when starting from zero - to re-qualify is less).
