Expiring miles reset?

I had 24k Lufthansa miles that were supposed to expire yesterday (9/30/19). I booked a flight for 25k miles but now I want to cancel it (can cancel by 6pm EST tonight given the 24 hour cancellation policy).

I called customer service and the rep said those miles would go back to my account and stay valid for another month. I called back and another rep said That’s not true “miles don’t expire on any random day, they always expire at the end of the quarter”. So he said they would either expire on 12/31/19 or maybe immediately. He also asked a manager who said they may stay valid for three days. Basically no one knows.

Anyone know what would happen to my miles? Anyone ever cancelled a ticket with miles that were expiring, and if so, what happened?

If you cancel and redeposit the miles stay valid till the end of the quarter.

even though they were supposed to expire yesterday? so me booking my ticket and cancelling it effectively extends the expiration by a quarter?

Yes it does but it has to be deposited after paying the 50€ cancellation fee. Voiding the ticket (for free) using the 24h rule won't do it.

ah I see. So then what will happen with those miles if I just cancel the ticket under the 24 hour rule?

They go away. When you cancel with the 50€ charge the miles post with a new expiration date (end of the quarter).

Is there a way to “resuscitate” expired miles (eg paying some penalty)?

Related question:

My mother has some 15K miles on her M&M account, which she will not use it for lack of opportunity, but will expire on 31.12.2019.

If she decides to transfer these 15K Miles to my own M&M account via Loylogic, paying the price they ask for this transfer, will these miles still expire on 31.12.2019 on my account?

I think I know the answer to this (given that M&M is rather 'old school') with miles expiring 31.12.19 can I book with them to travel in January?

You have to use the miles by the end of the year, for anything you like, which can be ticket for travel the next 12 months.

Apparently this isn't correct. I called yesterday to try to cancel my award ticket and have my miles redeposited and was told (by 2 different CS reps) that because the miles were supposed to expire on 10/1, if I cancel the ticket, the miles will immediately expire and not be reinstated (even until the end of the quarter).

Has anyone experienced something different?
