LH Group looks at buying A320 or B737 to replace CR9/A319

Nice time to be in the market...
Lufthansa expects to make a decision on its narrow-body 737 or A320 purchases next year, Spohr said. The airline does not currently have 737 MAX planes in its fleet or on order. It is replacing Airbus A319 and Bombardier CRJ planes.

I frankly don't understand this.
The CRJ-900 they have is currently operated with 79-85 seats according to seat guru (depending on C load), which is way to small even for the A318 line (where no neo-configuration exists).
The A319 they currently operate has 126-132 seats (depending on C load), which could work well with the proposed load of the 737 Max 7, even though that model has not been well accepted in the market so far.
I wonder whether the LH CEO meant to say A220 instead of A320, as the A220 would offer between 110-150 seats (depending on configuration) and is also part of the LH group fleet with Swiss.

In other outlets it has also been reported that the E190-E2 is also in the race. The A220 and E190 make more sense as CR9/A319 replacements...

There is a trend to move the "mainline/regional" (to use the US terminology) divide up in the airline business, including in LH Group itself (OS getting rid of dashes for example) and backlease lower capacity planes in.
So from that point of view, I can see that LH would get rid of even the A319 (LHC in turn getting rid of the CRJ? or god knows what will actually happen in that company) to backlease it from partners, like they already do with Dolomiti E-Jets for example.
Whether that is actually good business decision we can only speculate.

I agree it does not make sense, LX is very happy with the plane as well apparently. I love flying it it, one of the best washrooms for tall people of almost any plane!

Spohr has been making a bit of noise about this because LH has always been a very good Boeing customer. Probably wise to keep doors open given that 747-8 is over and the 777 order is balanced by the A350s, but I suspect Airbus will win the short haul order given the commitment top 320neos

Lufthansa has issued a clarification: the comment Spohr made was to express confidence in Boeing in general and that they will sort out the current issue eventually.
Also they stated that LH group is in the market for an aircraft to replace the CR9 and A319 group wide. Candidates are the CS/A220, A320, B737 and E190 series.

^ Thanks oliver2002.
That makes much more sense. My guess would be that A320 above means the whole A320 series, which would include the A319Neo.
