this is no longer possible. If you want to understand what used to be possible between April and September ... I suggest a good read of the UA thread that is posted upstream. The system allowed the new LH rules to be applied to UA GPUs as well ... something that was either not meant to be or something that UA more likely urged LH to discontinue.

Is it no longer possible to upgrade P fares with GPU?
Tried the United website. Error code says fare class not upgradable. And C, D, J are the only Business class fares listed as upgradable on Lufthansa. Called and spoke to a United agent who said the fare is not upgradeable using GPU.
Is there another way to do this?
Thanks for any help

To be honest, I got my 6 GPUs as a 1K and I’ve managed to use exactly 1 of them. They never clear. And my RPUs cleared only on super short legs like SFO-SEA or SFO-LAX.
Also based on anecdotal evidence, there are way too many 1Ks out there. The Group 1 line is always super long and I always spy the vast majority of domestic business holding 1K. I’d wager that if United made their highest tier harder to get, the benefits would feel more worthwhile (not counting GS as the highest tier as it’s invite only), but I get that that would be a very controversial thing for MileagePlus members.
