On-board purchase did not match description

Hello everyone,

A few weeks back when flying on Star Alliance metal, I made a purchase of the on-board menu.

The product was advertised as a smoked salmon sandwich, and the picture itself clearly displayed slices of smoked salmon.

However, when I received the sandwich, it consisted of some creamy salmon salad and did not at all match the product description.

Smoked salmon is a term that is not interchangeable with salmon paste/salad. This is therefore not an aesthetic issue, but an ingredient deception.

When I spoke to the Purser, I was told that I cannot expect to receive slices of salmon on board. When I told him that this is how it was advertised and displayed, he simply said "Well, it is not".

I was refused a refund, seeing as apparently that was no longer possible because the sale had already been entered into the system. (It also tasted quite horrible and dry)

I did not want anything else from the on-board menu, but it was the only choice I was given. I therefore had to choose a cheese sandwich, which I would under normal circumstances have never bought for that price.

Is there anything I can do? I feel this is very deceptive, and not ok at all.

As there are many airlines in Star Alliance it would help if you tell us which airline you were travelling on.

It was an SN flight.

Were you travelling with Vert? How do you know?

PS By the way, A3 does offer sliced salmon in Business...

I second NewbieRunner in welcoming you (and your travel partner as it seems, despite the 106 posts ;)) amongst us, Vert.

Was that the salmon bagel by any chance? If so, I entirely agree with you - ghastly stuff indeed, I tried it the other day on the afternoon service to Warsaw, a rather desperate move after missing the chance to get some food and a couple of Hoegaardens in the lounge (due to a Sukhoi jet playing up in Birmingham and causing a late arrival at Zaventem) ;) I wasn't too bothered, though (life is too short) - the Leffe that followed the [not even half] bagel was good enough to restore any loss of joy further to earlier disappointment ;)

It was the salmon bagel indeed, and I ordered it out of the same despair as you :D

Definitely a lesson learned. It was horrendous.

I've found the photo below on SN's Buy-On-Board menu on their website. The photo shows pieces of what looks like smoked salmon but the description reads 'cream cheese bagel with smoked salmon finished with some cucumber and dill'. Although it is called 'salmon bagel' it is actually 'cream cheese bagel' according to the description. I'm not defending SN and in any case pieces of salmon (if any) were probably smaller than what's shown in this photo.

Did the onboard menu (or any other menu you have seen) include a picture which clearly showed slices rather than pieces of smoked salmon? If you think the photo (or the description you saw) was misleading you might like to contact SN's company representative. You can also reach them via their Twitter account at https://twitter.com/FlyingBrussels/.

@NewbieRunner,

That is the bagel indeed. Mine however, looked like pictured below (note: some of the extremely dry bread got stuck to the cream when taking the top off)

[IMG] function leads to an enormous picture, which is why I will provide the links instead:
