Lufthansa Upgrades when booked on UA ticket 016?

Lufthansa Upgrades when booked on UA ticket 016?
Pardon what may be a relatively basic question, but my experience with Lufthansa when not booked directly is....lacking.
I have an SFO-FRA flight booked on LH metal via a 016 ticket. The flight number is the LH flight number, not a UA codeshare.
When I view the LH reservation via their conf number and look at the upgrade options I get "Unfortunately, we cannot offer you the cash upgrade option for this journey". I'm used to seeing some options for upgrades, not an error message.
Is this due to booking on 016 stock or due to the route/availability? Will bidding open up closer to check in?

While ticketed on UA stock, this is a LH question and will be best handled in the LH forum.

AFAIK, tickets must be on 220 stock if you want to pay up or bid for a higher cabin class BEFORE checkin. It's a different story if you try to do this at the airport or via (LH) miles or vouchers.

Does this mean I can upgrade a UA codeshare flight number 016 ticket at T-23 during LH online checkin? What fareclass needs to be available to upgrade? Thanks.

You may be able to use any "spare" GPU's that you have available...
