After being fully embedded in the processes of Commercial Passenger Airlines, Brussels Airlines presents itself stronger for the competition

In its still young history, the company has had to master many challenges and crises, and it has always continued its way out of the crises stronger than before. Today, Brussels Airlines is Belgium’s self-confident home carrier, holding its own in the market against low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, as well as against network airlines such as Air France/KLM and IAG.

Brussels Airlines also has a firm place among the Lufthansa Group’s airlines, securing a key position for the Lufthansa Group in the heart of Europe. Brussels Airlines’ hub Brussels covers the largest domestic catchment area with 23 million people within a radius of 150 kilometers. It also is one of the most important hubs for companies, for NGOs and for the EU institutions. Last but not least, “It is Africa where Brussels Airlines has its core competence and this is working very well” says Harry Hohmeister, the Executive Board member responsible for the Commercial Passenger Airlines segment.

A decisive part in the current position of Brussels Airlines was played by the “Reboot” transformation program. The program was further intensified by the Covid 19 crisis in order to pave the way for a sustainable company that can face the competition with a solid and healthy cost structure. The result of the restructuring is impressive: The embedding of Brussels Airlines, also known internally as “Dotted Moon,” as the first non-German-speaking Lufthansa Group airline in all departments of the Executive Board division Commercial Passenger Airlines has been completed. As a result, Brussels Airlines is participating in the decision-making process of the Lufthansa Group as part of the whole and is contributing to the economic success of the whole.

Harry Hohmeister pointed out that this is critical for Brussels Airlines to be able to remain a relevant player in the market.

For Peter Gerber, CEO Brussels Airlines, the integration of his airline into the Commercial Passenger Airlines Executive Board department also marks an important milestone on the way to the economic goal of achieving profitable growth. On the one hand, there are the contributions to cost savings of 5.3 million euros in 2022 and 6.6 million euros in 2023. These figures reflect net savings and also include cost savings from the use of shared tools and economies of scale. On the other hand, embedding also helps improve revenues, according to Peter Gerber: €5.4 million in 2022 and €12.9 million in 2023.

“The embedding also means a change in mentality,” Gerber emphasizes. “Brussels Airlines is now more than ever part of the strong Lufthansa Group. It is adopting the advantages that come with integration into Lufthansa processes and tools. To the extent that the Lufthansa Group assumes responsibility for Brussels Airlines, Brussels Airlines also assumes responsibility for the Lufthansa Group, for example for its African business.” And with the new “home languages” of French and Dutch, for example, the Lufthansa Group will also become more international.

Wasn't keeping out the LCC competition the main point though? And the same for LH trying to hoover up other airlines (like the recent interest in acquiring a substantial stake in ITA).
I suppose any actual profit would be a bonus on top.
