Bit the bullet today and upgraded for 3080SEK. As expected the booking was changed from M to P. The amount paid was almost ~100€ less than the fare difference:

Code:

*** FOR STAR ALLIANCE RTW* SEE FQD XYZXYZ EG:FRAFRA ***

Curiously the ticket is not stickered, but instead a sepearate upgrade receipt is attached to the reservation. Now curious on how the flight will post to my account. Status miles should be the same for P or M, so I'm not worried there.

Sounds fair. Much better than the “230 euros pampering offer” I just received for an approximately one hour flight from BRU to MUC.
  • Fast track, prio boarding & lounge - already covered through SEN.
  • Empty middle seat - I take my chances.
  • Pampered by LH catering right now? Moahahaha
Maybe interesting if I could get most of the upgrade refunded through a catering claim...

Not sure if $100 less than fare difference is a great deal... guess it depends on fare difference timing. I had a LH flight in April that was ORD-FRA-BCN on 747i and then returned on LX flight of VCE-ZRH-ORD. I initially could have gotten RT for $6K USD in F, but screwed around waiting for a slightly better fare and then price starting climbing steadily from around six months prior to departure until it reached about $14k USD. I was left with a P fare in Bus which was booked through the cruise line. I was considering bidding for an upgrade, but when looking at my reservation on LH site about 30 days prior to departure I saw an upgrade offer for the ORD-FRA segment. This system would not process the upgrade offer so I called LH customer service and the agent confirmed it was available and was able to book it for me. The great part was that it equaled $100 less than the net out of pocket cost difference if I taken the cruise lines measly air credit and booked F six months prior to departure. And about $3k better than the fare difference at the time I booked the upgrade offer. I think was extremely fortunate.... and wished I was returning on LH instead of LX to see if I could have gotten an offer for the return flight as well.

Does anyone have experience as to what the cash upgrade books into when going from Y->PE? I would normally assume it goes into N as discounted PE. The offer is $230 (27 days out and ticket booked in U for ~$1200 DEN-FRA) which isn't that much more than I would consider bidding on with myoffer. I have another flight a month later that is booked in L for ~$600 where the offer is $400 (61 days out) just as a data point. Cash upgrade showed immediately after booking for both flights.

Question

Hello FT, has anyone experienced this error message before? This error message has been showing for the past 3 days already, doubt LH is really spending so much time to revenue manage one flight and recalculating availabilities... am trying to upgrade to PE on LH742 on 6th Sept, offer was £220 from S.

You need to call the number shown there, they can check what's wrong. Sometimes the booking class is not available even though the first check may have shown some availability.

Quick data point. My L fare from DEN-FRA was showing $400 to upgrade to PE, but now that it crossed the 30 days away line, it jumped to $810. C class is still showing ~$1000 for the upgrade. I'm wondering if this is tied to PE seat availability as the seatmap is filling up (last time I checked via KVS tool).

Its clearly tied to the lowest booking class open in the other cabin.

I would agree, but I haven't been tracking what booking classes are available. It feels like this is more just an upgrade to an available fare class as opposed to the cash upgrade scheme.

When going into MMB for a flight FRA-ORD in Z in ten days, I see a notice that says FANCY FLYING IN FIRST CLASS? And then asking me to make an offer for the upgrade. There is a little slider that lets me choose how much I'm willing to bid, with the minimum being 1260€ and the maximum being 2500€. A little terror-alert-style thermometer changes from red (1260€) to green (2500€) depending on what level I choose.

I'm not willing to pay 1260€ for F (nor half that) so have ignored it for now. I'm hoping to see something like 300-400 come up closer to check-in, flight is currently F4 A4.

Hope springs eternal

However I think LH revenue management would rather see empty seats that Z to A for 400 EUR.
