BA will be using state of the art aircraft 789 with brand new First product to SJC, unlike LH who is sending an almost 25 years old plane

"Seasoned and proven" would be the advertising language for that

How is the on-board service on CityLine long-haul compared to the mainline service? Not going to SJ that often anymore, could have used that last 5 years... but still for my once in a while flight it could be attractive not to have the drive from SFO down to the valley, especially the timings are quite nice.

No difference between CL and LH 343, the cabin and service is the same. Only difference is smaller C cabin and the galley layout (since C is served from the front galley only. Crewise the FA are LH Mainline, Flight Deck is Cityline.

Not that it matters, the 343 currently in service with LH were inducted in 1996-2001. After reading the BA line maintainance practices in the A319 LHR incident report (where they performed an inspection on the wrong aircraft because they didn't bother to look for a tail number) I would reserve judgement if I prefer a 789 Dream...ner to a 343.

LH Coming to SJC / San Jose

Effected Apr 29 ( as reported in the LH forum ) LH starts FRA-SJC-FRA service. Wondering if that will help increase UA operations at SJC, which are at a low point at this time. And personally I wonder if I will be able to do awards trips the long way? NRT-SJC on NH and SJC-FRA on LH, the best of both worlds. I already do NRT-AMS-SFO on TK. So why not.

What are they gonna fly? 340s? And I'm guessing they will use the same lounge NH uses?

EDIT: 340s, 5x a week.

If I read this correctly after June 30 the flight will switch from 3 class LH mainline to High Density LH Cityline
Don't think I want to redeem MP miles on those flights, not even sure if it's possible.

I think it makes sense for LH not to put a plane with F on SJC-FRA. But it's unfortunate that the 343's with no F also don't have many C seats. I'd expect that they could fill a lot of paid C on this route.

Another prediction: this route lasts exactly until the end of the current tech bubble.

I think there's no chance UA rebuilds operations out of SJC. (though I wish they would). My guess is that the main effect of this on other things UA does is to increase capacity Bay Area - FRA - XXX, and thus slightly reduce ticket prices on the SFO flights, mainly in Y and also a bit in C.

And you're right -- the planes LH is using for this are lousy. No F (which I think makes sense for this route). More importantly, at least to me: not much C and the C is angled seats, not flat beds. That's true even before the June 30 switch. (On June 30 they switch from a fairly sucky 343 to a truly-sucky one).

Edit: note: my statement about angled seats was incorrect. See next two posts.

There are no more angled seats left anywhere on LH.
