DXB for 200€ "no frills", I could see working as that would be indeed much cheaper than anothing else (bar Ukraine international and maybe Pegasus in sale with SAW etc.) especially as it's a direct flight.

However, I'm already starting to wonder if Thailand for 400€ could work. Note that 400€ RT is only for the direct flight from CGN. From ZRH, they're already asking above 300€ one way as the cheapest offer.

So, we're talking 600€+ for a RT with a no-frills carrier, changing in CGN, when booking LONG ahead.

Did anyone in the Elfenbeinturm actually checked what other carriers - full service one's - are charging for that route? Hint: It's less, it's with baggage, it's with proper food (for Y), with IFE, etc. etc.

Good luck with that..

EK Y to BKK seems to be at €499 throughout most of the year.
Of course not nonstop.
I guess the backpacking crowd doesn't care too much.

Well, via CGN also isn't nonstop..

I guess Ex-CGN, the fare isn't too bad for most destinations.. but once you compare the fares from the other markets - especially towards Asia - not so many destinations are left which they could really sell in my eyes.

Being 100€ more expensive than a full service carrier won't work for a no-frills airline, that's for sure..

This thing will go bust within 3 month.....no way are they competing with service 2 x a week on weekdays no leisure traveller wants to fly and waste their vacation time


Well - maybe I am wrong they will keep burning money with this "idea" of an airline...

Amendment 16:14 CET:
Just made a dummy price request and the website shows the seat map:

The a/c offers:
+ three rows of "best seats" with a 2-3-2 configuration (=21 seats)

+ then three rows with 2-4-2 seating and the 4 seats in the last row of the "Zone A" on the main deck
(these denominated as "standard seats") -> 28 seats

+ then some rows of seats with more legroom and a pillow
6 rows 2-4-2 with additional legroom -> 48 seats

+ 23 rows of standard seats 2-4-2 -> 184 seats
+ 4 rows of seats in a 2-3-2 configuration due to the narrower fuselage at the back -> 28 seats
+ a middle block of 3 seats as last row -> 3 seats

All in-all it seems that there are 21 seats for the "BEST" fare and 291 seats for the other fare
classes.

You can do the math's about possible revenue and pitch yourself....
21 BEST Seats with 45" Seat Pitch, 46 More Comfort with 34", 243 seats "BASIC/SMART" with 30".

The entire article sets the tone as if EW is the weapon of choice LH against the ME3. In reality its an attempt to siphon off leisure pax from the DUS/CGN area that would normally fly AB. AB longhaul is going full service and this is going to give them problems to maintain low prices to leisure pax without loosing money. Also the new AOC of EW in VIE seems to go against ABs subsidiary Niki. ZRH is also a big AB/Niki operation...

So LH did this while completely ignoring each and every GCC3 airline, including specifically the EY-backed AB? That would be very surprising to me.

But the question was about how is the article headline "poppycock"? I still don't see an answer to that question in your response above. Or is your issue (with the article) derived from the body of the article rather than from the article headline?

I looked from HAM to BKK and it costs me 580Euro with the no frills fare.
Why shall I fly with EW instead of EK?

Airline route published the schedule.

The airline will be operating Airbus A330-200 aircraft in 3 sections – BEST Section, More Comfort Area and BASIC/SMART Section. The BEST Section features the industry’s largest seat pitch (in terms of long-haul low-cost carrier’s equivalent offering) of 45″ with 21 seats. Indeed, looks to me they are competing with AB and DE in order to fill the Aidas ex Dubai.

Like NewbieRunner mentioned in one of the best contributions to this thread so far, it looks like a proper offer for tour operators and package holidays.

I love to give the Neksayers the benefit of the doubt, but comparing a hub and spoke operation like DXB-XXX with 90% connecting traffic and P2P flights mainly catering to tourists is like, well, mmmhhh, comparing LH F and LH NEK or Capitalism and Socialism, real Bio milk and milk powder

This emphasizes my opinion that this offer won't be competitive. As other FTers already mentioned this "Long-Haul Wings" could be a cash-burning experience for Lufty.

Generations of business administration students or people starting in consulting business surely will gain another example for a barrel burst business strategy.

LOT in Poland has an agreement with a couple tour operators to send their 787 packed with turists (similar config seat wise even).

I see no reason why LH couldn't do a similar aproach with pre-filling the cabin with tour package groups and the rest via regular customers who prefer a non-stop.
Certainly wouldn't expect them to green light a project where the main has no chance for break even. Sticking it to AB might be that break even, but that's ultimately a pissing contest with EY, which is a lose-lose situation.
