FRA closed for 4 days!
Runway repairs at the Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt Airport has closed all four runways for repairs until Friday, April 4. The repairs were originally scheduled to be done between May and December 2014 without closing the airport. They have been rescheduled to this week in order to take advantage of a 3-day-long strike by Lufthansa pilots. The walkout will not only ground Lufthansa, the single biggest user of the airport, but will result in cancellation of many feeder flights by other airlines as well. And while the strike isn't officially beginning until tomorrow, Star Alliance has canceled a lot of flights today in order not to strand too many passengers in Frankfurt. The airport management team decided to take advantage of this unique situation to complete urgently needed runway repairs this week. Instead of causing individual runway closures and months of flight delays until the end of 2014, the repairs will be carried out around the clock on all four runways at the same time, and will be finished early Saturday. The three old runways will be resurfaced, eliminating frequent bumps and reducing the wear of the landing gear. New EASA-mandated markings and brighter edge lights will be added as well. The recently built runway 07L/25R will receive a foam coating that will dramatically reduce the noise of landing aircraft - an issue that caused many complaints from residents near the airport. During the repairs, the remaining traffic bound for Frankfurt will be rerouted to the Frankfurt-Hahn airport, located in the beautiful hills of Germany's Hunsrück region. Passengers checking in at Frankfurt will enjoy a free transfer to the Hahn airport with Zeppelin NT airships. Please check your flight status with the airline for details. Frankfurt Airport always puts travelers first, and wishes everyone a safe and pleasant journey! (Source: www.fraport.de/ APRIL FOOL news1404eng.html) |

Yes- in fact First Class passengers are exempt from the runway closings (they will keep one runway open and only service it from FCT)- PROVIDED only that their tickets were not issued by US Airways.
