LufthansaFlyer,

I am also here in Tulsa and I am impressed to see how many aircraft they have been "retiring" to Tulsa.

It is very interesting to see so many aircraft being taken apart.

I believe they are at either 28 or 29 so far. Another MD-11 soon and I believe a couple more 737s between now and then.

How do these arrive--stripped of seats, galley, etc. Or fully equipped with first class seats, emergency cards and so forth?

Just for those interested, the depreciation rules of LH group aircraft:

Back in 2011 the annual report was a bit more detailled:
Flugzeuge Neue Verkehrsflugzeuge werden ber zwlf Jahre
bis auf einen Restbuchwert von 15 Prozent abgeschrieben.
ber die voraussichtliche Nutzungsdauer von zwlf Jahren
hinaus genutzte Verkehrsflugzeuge werden bis auf einen
Restbuchwert von 10 Prozent abgeschrieben. Darber hinaus
werden ber eine Nutzungsdauer von 14 Jahren hinaus
genutzte Verkehrsflugzeuge auf einen Restbuchwert von
5 Prozent abgeschrieben.
Gebraucht erworbene Flugzeuge werden ohne
Bercksichtigung von Restbuchwerten innerhalb von acht
Jahren abgeschrieben. Die Abschreibung der Flugzeuge
bei Zugngen bis einschlielich 2007 erfolgte grundstzlich
degressiv. Bei Zugngen im Geschftsjahr 2008 erfolgte die
Abschreibung in Anlehnung an die genderten steuerlichen
Abschreibungsregeln linear. Zugnge im Geschftsjahr
2009 wurden unter Bercksichtigung des Finanzmarktstabilisierungsgesetzes
wieder degressiv abgeschrieben.
Zugnge werden seit 2010 nunmehr wieder linear abgeschrieben.
ie 12-14 year old aircraft are worth 10-15% in the books, 14+year old 5%.

This is helpful in reference to the aircraft deployed on some routes and the timing of retrofits that are currently done on aircraft that are either approaching the 12 year mark or older.

Not that it is all that important to the discussion, but anyone know what kind(s) of accelerated depreciation schedule(s) was/were used until 2007 and in 2009 under the "Financialmarketstabilisationact"?

It did not change, 12 years down to 15% is used since a long time.

In the regulated cost plus accounting era, when airlines had to produce costs, depreciation was, of course, faster.

P.S.

BA used to depreciate over twenty years down to 10 % using the straight line method as well. Delta up to 25, in some cases, 30 years down to 10%

Thanks, good information, but I was really looking to find out what formula(s) were used to calculate depreciation in the years that the schedules were not linear.

Accelerated depreciation has usually only second-order effects on accrued expenses and asset values, but when investment decisions are strictly numbers driven, depreciation schedules can affect repair/replace decisions around the margins a little bit.

OTOH, if you believe in the power of cash flows, depreciation schedules are more of an accountant employment thing, and/or maybe a rough reminder of when it is time to think about re-investing in long-term assets.

If you read the annual reports you will find that LH had to take write offs on 744 and 343s because they had no resale value and the residual book value was higher.

How old are the 343s? Are they >15 years?

Yea, with so many carriers dumping their old 744s in that past couple of years, I can believe even parting them out wouldn't make sense in most cases. That 5% residual starts to add up when you dump a bunch of airframes all at once...on the other hand, that is cash long since out the door, and what is a few tens of millions in depreciation expense among friends these days?

The 343s were bought in two batches: one when the A340 was launched and the German govt pretty much dictated the state owned carrier to buy (1992-96), the second when they were really cheap (1998-2001):

According to airfleets.net the oldest was delivered in May 1994.
