Ekaterinburg/SVX cancelled as of 22JAN

According to ch-aviation Ekaterinburg/SVX to end 22JAN.

Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) will drop Frankfurt Int'l to Ekaterinburg, Russia flights from January 22, 2014 as part of its cost-reduction drive. "We deeply regret that Lufthansa, after ten years of partnership, is withdrawing," Koltsovo spokesman Dmitry Tjuchtin told Russian newswire, RIANovosti. The airport is reportedly in talks with five local carriers to help fill the gap. However, Russian opposition politician, Alexander Burkov, claims the move was politically engineered to favour Russian carriers at the expense of the Germans. "In my opinion, Lufthansa was displaced from the market," he said, adding that the airline's 04h00L departure slot had rendered the flights "uncomfortable" and therefore unviable.

I used the LH route rarely, but it was convenient...

Intersting, as SVX is featured in the Nov issue of LH Magazin. With claims that they have the most flights there from Germany and such. Editorial board must have some independence from the route planners, perhaps.

That's definitely the case. BRS became the highlight city (and cover illustration) to LH Magazin in June 2009, 3 months after LH stopped flying there.

Eliminating SGN is another shame. Seems strange that such a booming early stage market cannot support one tag on flight per day.

IMO that has been LH's pitfall, most booming cut destinations (CAN,CCU,SGN,HYD) were 3 weekly. Half commitment does not seem to pay back.
But I also see tag ons from *A hubs such as BKK and SIN ineffective, SQ and TG networks are there to deliver those.
Why not FRA-HAN-SGN-FRA?

Why not FRA-HAN-SGN-FRA?
I doubt they would be allowed to fly HAN/SGN by VN.

In any event- I don't know if the tag ons with *A work as well either- anyway giving up on a bunch of Asian destinations as the market expands rapidly in demand does not seem the way forward. And PNH? RGN? This is the customer of tomorrow being handed to the GCC.

EK to SGN (since spring 2012) may be a reason, ok. But a 744 is now sitting +10 hours on the tarmac in BKK. Tag ons seem another voice of cut in the LH budget.

CAPA had an interesting analysis on the topic. My main take away - EK operating a daily 278-seater two-class A330-200 became instantly the third largest carrier from outside Asia serving Vietnam.
Just shows how underserved the market was. And now abandoning seems a good option for LH...

LH will fix that as of 30MAR. Plenty of upset FF with the schedule change.

Ho Chi Minh City will be suspended while Bangkok will be a turnaround service with an afternoon departure ex-BKK.

LH772 FRA 1735 - 0935+1 BKK 346 D
LH773 BKK 1200 - 1830 FRA 346 D

Fortunately I have a reservation for mid March therefore overlooked changes.
CAPA as always hits the mark. No wonder the EK SGN-DXB has been a prolific source of opup in my experience.

CCU got 13x weekly EK flights and a daily QR flight in 2011 which effectively killed the LH flight which was 3x in 2006 then 5x in 2007 then daily 2008-10 and then progressed down the ladder in 2010-12.
HYD is a similar story.

Lufthansa New/Cancelled Routes and Changes

On a somewhat related note I am now waiting since 4 weeks to hear from Germanwings for my rebookings on the canceled GVA-TXL. I had made suggestions to be rebooked on LH, but the only thing offered was a refund and telling me i should book Easyjet (which is now more than double the price already). Will wait a bit more but very bad experience.
