Looks like the time of real benefits is over. Look at the devaluations to the mileage charts. The US airlines seem to almost constantly increase the number of miles necessary for an award ticket, often now differentiating between their own flights and other alliance members (see the latest moves of United). They also add a revenue component to reaching status.

Others like Lufthansa limit the miles earned on cheaper fares and partner airlines.

This is not a Lufthansa issue, it seems to happen across the board over many years. Looks like the airlines now believe they can sell more tickets, especially for premium cabins and be more profitable by straight out selling these seats instead of giving upgrades or award tickets away (or just getting the fees for these seats).

We should not complain, we should adjust. Our loyalty is worth less, so why not just use whatever airline has he best schedule and quality for the money they ask for?

Of course Lufthansa is absolutely right. It's superior service speaks for itself

Another push towards going for Miles and Smiles (TK) as primary FFP. When you fly both LH and TK, better to credit to TK(M&S) then to LH(M&M). And because status on M&M is valid for 2 years, plenty of time to build status on M&S (which is not true the other way around). And the liberal status matching of TK...

M&S status is also valid for two years. They match *G with no issues.

And for those outside Turkey, the requirement for re-qualification is amazingly low - 25k in one year or 40k over two years of the Elite membership.

Somebody who just barely makes FTL on flying long haul Economy on LH, will easily make Elite Plus on TK with the same travel patterns. I'd say it's a no-brainer...

It's heating up the discussion.

ch-aviation on the axing of Codeshares

Turkish Airlines slams Lufthansa's "unilateral" move to axe codeshare

28NOV2013

Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Atatrk) has protested a collective move by Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna), Swiss (LX, Zurich) and their parent Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) to axe a codeshare agreement with effect from March 2014. In its statement, the Turkish national carrier said it did not approve of Lufthansa's "unilateral" decision and hoped the move would be "reconsidered." The German carrier had complained of Turkish' continued incursion into its domestic market which, it said, had resulted in some routes becoming unprofitable. Turkish Airlines went on to add that "as a member of Star Alliance, it provides its services to all passengers of the other member airlines. Code-share flights and Frequent Flyer Programme (FFP) applications should be considered in this context."
The original post also from ch-aviation on codeshares being dropped:
Austrian, Lufthansa drop codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines

26NOV2013

Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) and parent Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) will end their codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Atatrk) effective March 29, 2014. German tourism publication, biztravel, says the two carriers believe the current codeshare arrangement no longer "makes financial sense". The likelihood of a withdrawal has been brewing for some time given Lufthansa's recent complaints that Turkish has added and continues to add routes from regional airports in Germany and Austria to its Istanbul Atatrk hub. Among the flights affected are domestic German and US-bound flights.

Correct! But anyone flying a lot within Germany or from Germany within Europe has a double-dilemma: any flight not passing by the LH hubs of FRA,MUC,ZRH, VIE or BRU will be on Germanwings in the near future. Germanwings is not part of Star Alliance, so whoever changes to TK- or A3-membership will lose the possible credit for all these flights.

I would fly TK only if going east is enroute.
I dont find it viable to use IST to go west TATL from AMS.
TK does have many good points (seat/food/lounge) but i find them to inconsistent: Not every aircraft has fully flat business, lounge can be a zoo and service very surly. At least lufthansa has consistency with angled business and attentive crew. So i think that if you go east then its worth taken up their FFP instead of MM

*A should consider kicking LH out. That would be a true enhancement of quality.

TK has a wide variety of interior on offer, 50% of the fleet has rather horrid seating and best of all you are never certain you are going to get it. Longhaul 343 and 333/77W is heaven & earth, A321 and 738 also have two versions. The grass is not really super duper green.
