Cool New OS destination: Newark EWR

Apparently Austrian is planning to launch a flight to Newark beginning in October 2014. Although there is no offical announcement yet, it looks pretty certain based on an airlineroute.net entry ... they say it is scheduled as one-time service but I highly doubt that

OS089 VIE1015 – 1335EWR 763
OS090 EWR1755 – 0835+1VIE 763

Makes sense if so- there is quite a bit of pharma industry in and around Vienna and EWR is about the closest airport there is excluding corporate to Princeton.

I've read that it is a one-time-only service.

It is one-time only for now, but looks like people believes it's a prelude to a scheduled service. The schedule has been removed, by the way.

The new l/h destination for OS will be EWR starting from July 2014, 5 times a week with a 767. Furthermore OS wants to increase ORD from 5 to 7 flights per week from May on.
IAD will be served with a 777 instead of a 767 from July.
So all in all OS is increasing the capacities to NA.

I think they are looking to pump pax into the EWR hub for onward connections, JFK is a dead end in that respect. ORD is the same, excellent connections.

OS is getting one more 772 this winter, which will go into service after painting and retrofits.

EWR is a good choice, but I'm not so sure about the flight schedule. The plane to JFK is leaving 20 mins later. An evening flight to JFK would make more sense.

13:35 arr into EWR is perfect to catch the late afternoon bank of departures on UA and the reverse 6pm departure is nice too. If you leave late out of JFK, you miss the wave of depatures from VIE to CE Europe

You forget about the pent-up Eastern European pax traffic that has to go to JFK for any reasonable non-LH carriers. EWR basically having only sLOTh and LH (for *A at least) left a lot to be desired for those traveling to Eastern Europe. Besides, it is soooo much easier to get to EWR than JFK for ½ of NYC and everything North West and South.

Selfish as I am, I'd like to see OS-codeshares on UA's ORD-YHZ and EWR-YHZ flights.

No codeshares needed since UA/LH/AC/OS/SN/LX jointly file fares across the Atlantic, so you can use whatever flight number to construct the trip.
