Upgrade from Saver fare

Can you upgrade to business from a Saver fare? If so, is the minimum bid higher?

Planning a trip HKG-VIE in economy in mid Sept. (never flown OS before). Just wondering does star alliance gold status count for anything when bidding for the upgrades to business class? There are flights available for around 700eur per person return at present on OS site. Is this a good price to buy at or do you think it will come down further?

How does the upgrade process work? Do you get the opportunity to bid immediately? Does the bid take you from economy to business?
Once you bid does that tie you up until potentially 72 hours prior to boarding without knowing whether the upgrade has come through?

Thanks for any advice on this.

I am booked on the same route and paid less than 500 euro for a return economy fare. I think it might be worth waiting, as I have seen them often around the 550 euro mark.

Yes, you can bid straight to business from economy. On my outbound, there is only the option to upgrade to business, starting from 200 euro. On the return, I have the option to upgrade to premium economy or business, with business starting at 300 euro (I guess the introduction of premium means they are charging a higher minimum for business).

From my understanding, I will find out whether the upgrade is confirmed 72-48 hours before the flight. And yes, you can bid immediately after purchasing the ticket.

Thanks aj747m. Not sure if I can access that EUR price you got as my flights originate in HKG and the price you im getting is 13330HKD which is equivalent to 700EUR but I’ll monitor the site. Also thanks for lettiing me know how that bidding process works. I also noticed that I could fly fromHKG to ZRH with Swiss and there also seems to be an upgrade process as well. At least there are quite a few options!

My price was in HKD as well - $4700. Yes, Swiss also has an upgrade option but is significantly more expensive. I think it starts around 700 euro (one of the main reasons I chose Austrian instead )

Thanks to clarify, that 13330 KD is for two return. So still $6665. But if you got HKG-VIE for $4700 return that's pretty good!! When are you travelling? Was that on a special that's not being offered at the moment?

Travelling in March. I can see similarly priced tickets up until May, so I don't think it's uncommon that they sell for around that price.

Is this program available to tickets purchased through United or another codeshare partner? Any recent success/amounts to share?

Flying a two-segment intra-Europe outbound this weekend. And, I bid only on one segment, which got accepted. Whole itinerary booked as T. Now the upgraded segment is Business Flex P, and the other segment is "Business Flex T".

This is completely expected and I have no complaints or misunderstandings whatsoever. But, I just thought it was a little funny to see "Business Flex T". I suppose this means I have all the fare conditions of Business P for both segments, but I just can't ride up front for both segments.
