I made an offer for VIE-GVA for EUR140 for next week. Probably too much, you might say, but at least I stand a reasonable chance of getting it this way (booked 4 segment trip in E-class which works out at EUR53 per segment which is pretty good). I'll report back if I get it or not. I suspect that offering something like EUR80 is unrealistic and the offer will be refused. Still not sure how it works, though.

Oh is that possible on short haul flights? I could do that and just cancel the upgrade bid. There is still the possibility of cancelling, according to the email I received.

My bid of EUR140 on the VIE-GVA route was accepted. To be honest, I probably won't do it again on a short route like that, but I'll be glad to be right at the front of the plane (and enjoy all the service trimmings, of course). I can shoot straight out and make a beeline for the car that will be waiting to take me to rehearsal and hopefully be not too late. At least, that's how I'm trying to justify it to myself.
And we get the P-class miles now, don't we? That didn't used to be the case with Red Upgrades I believe.

Actually, I ended up on OS to ZRH then LX to GVA, which including LH (operated by CL) made three airlines in one day on one ticket. The OS service on VIE-ZRH was excellent, with old world style service and presentation of the various bottles of Austrian wine (one a Blauer Zweigelt very much worth trying). A small hot meal was served with dessert, a tad frugal but still better than what you get on LH (is VIE-GVA any better?).
I always marvel at how the SWISS cabin crew manage to serve a small meal between ZRH and GVA, quite tastefully presented. You really have to stuff it in your mouth before they snatch the tray away from you during the descent to Geneva. Only managed one glass of surprisingly good Pinot Noir du Valais.
