So I just booked IAD-VIE for the end of September. It booked into booking code S, which appears to earn me no FF points in any of the 3 *A programs I belong to (UA, SK, OZ).

I went to the Smart Upgrade page, and when I pull up my itinerary, it defaults to $530 as the suggested offer for a C upgrade.

I noticed that according to the program information, the upgrade will book as P booking code, however that also earns 0 points on UA and OZ. On SK it earns 100%.

Is that really the case? I know there are discrepancies between *A carriers, but just seems odd that a business class (ok, upgraded) code earns 0 points for some *A carriers.

Any suggestions on bidding? Have others had success at bidding below their suggested number?

Right now, the flight looks really empty in eco, so I actually don't mind doing the flight in the back if I have a seat or two beside me free. The prospect of 0 FF points is not great though.

Just another data point: ORD-VIE, family of five on a cheap RedTicket (T). Offer of 300 Euro pp accepted and notification sent out about 60 hours before departure. Given the number of us on one PNR, I'm surprised the offer was accepted. This will be a nice surprise for the wife and kids when we board (hoping to keep it secret until then).

My joy is tempered by lack of earning of P class on Mileage Plus or Dividend Miles, so miles will go to A3.

hrm, if that was done both ways, 2x520EUR + 700 = 1700EUR RT which is about what theyre selling it straight up for ARN-VIE-BKK.

And in this case you will also get 2 shorthauls in J which better than eco for the same price. That's why i mentioned above I only bid low for this route.

You are right and I though the same but depending in your country of origin you never get offers below 2000/2500 euros to go to BKK.

I received a mail last week offering "special" Biz class BKK ex BCN at around Euros 2350.

LH had an offer at around 1700/1800 euros a few months ago but I prefer to stay away from their C product if I can.

Anyone know if there's any reason that I can't do this if I buy the ticket on united.com? I'm looking at buying an open-jaw, with VIE-JFK on OS and EWR-LHR on UA.

It's $700 r/t in economy, or $2300 r/t if I do the VIE-JFK segment in business. I haven't seen any reports of success on VIE-JFK here, but from the few experiences that others have reported on ORD and IAD, it seems that I could probably offer far less than that $1600 difference and get the upgrade.

Their FAQ says: ticket number must start with 257

I bid 320 eur/person each leg for VIA-IAD. We will se what will turn out. Though it is a bit let down that they consider outbound and inbound as different bids.

This is an extremely smart move by OS - they overbook Eco and collect money from passengers for doing so. :-)

I offered $750 for VIE-YYZ 10/22/2013

I offered $750 for an upgrade to J on the VIE-YYZ service on October 22nd, the flight is operated by a 767.

Can anyone give me any feedback as to A) If you think the price i offered is too high, or too low, and B) what are my chances, given your previous experience with this or similar VIE-N.A. routes?

Thanks.
(I know my questions are quite vague)
