LH A330 crosses the atlantic while damaged

According to http://www.thelocal.de/national/20130410-49059.html

Lufthansa on Wednesday said it was investigating how one of its planes was flown across the Atlantic with a damaged rear end - without any of the staff realizing.

The back end of the A330 airbus hit the runway at Chicago airport as it was taking off on March 5th - but no-one noticed and it took off as normal.

The trans-Atlantic flight to Munich, with a cruising altitude of 11,000 metres, continued as normal, landing in Bavaria after more than eight hours in the air.

Nobody on board realized the damage to the plane - but Germany's air accident investigations board (BFU) recorded the incident as a “severe fault” and said together with Lufthansa, it would be carrying out a full investigation into what happened.

“The cabin was not damaged,” although there were visible scrape marks on the outside, said a BFU spokesman. He added that they wanted to find out how the crew had not noticed or reacted to the incident.

It was D-AIKJ, and it's been out of service since the ferry flight to Hamburg.

Why is the German media just picking up the story now? Not that it's much of a story.

Stern, Spiegel and Welt picked it up this week because the Bundesluftfahrtamt released a report and called the incident a "schwere Störung".

Whoever was piloting the plane will do some extra hours in the simulator for sure.

I'm aware :-) I was referring to Spiegel and such whom the Local usually takes their stories from and rewrites in English.
