If the OP wants to fly in First, I'd suggest to book an F award ...

According to expertflyer (I checked before), F was available on that particular flight.

This is an excellent suggestion- with the new policies of Lufthansa the only solution really or book and pay for a C or J fare class and hope for an OP UP (not likely at all).

Happened to me 1,5 years ago IAD-MUC.
Had originally booked a Y Ticket and upgraded with Miles to I Class. Arrived in the Lounge at IAD where the LD handed my my new boarding pass with booking class O. SEN status.

Nice trip, but way to short to enjoy the whole F service

I had it twice on vacation I-award flights with Mrs. CalFlyer (once to L.A., once to CapeTown). A nice gesture of appreciation for a HON from day 1.

But this was many years back. I would not expect anything like this happen today anymore.

I have had it 3 times, and in 2 occasions was with Mrs more4less

LH MUC-JFK - 2*I op uped to O
LX EWR-ZRH - 2*I op uped to O
LH FRA-ADD - I to O and it was a with discounted number of miles

so 3 times out of 35/40 segments long haul over the years.

Actually IIRC I have never been op-uped when traveling with Mrs m4l on long haul paid tickets, but often I have upgrade to F using different instruments.
