There is no need to get some miles into the account. More details here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bmi-d...sterclass.html

Search included east/west-bound TATL as well as some asia routes in both directions as well. That said, the only segment that has been giving me trouble (i.e. didn't open up at the 15 day mark) is the westbound TATL flight I want to take.

Looks like if I wanna fuel up in a Japanese gas station, I'm in business, but I can't find much else. ^
You only need miles in your ANA account to search Star Allisnce in the first step. ANA still let's you check *A w no miles in your account but you need to do a fake search using ANA flts only first. Then, when you don't find what you want it gives to option of looking at *A flights. (all you need is an account. 0 balance is fine)

Very helpful - thanks!

Would you mind just making something clear, please? Did you use the United MP or the ANA site to search, and do you have to phone UA to actually make the bookings?

If you are using UA miles for awards you will have to call UA MP or use their website to make a booking. People use the ANA site to search for awards because it is more reliable. UA is believed to show "phantom" availability especially in F from time to time.

Doesn't the UA website show all available *A seats? I am trying to get 2 award seats in F from MUC or ZRH to BOS on LH or LX for August 9th -- we're within two weeks and the flights have F8 and F7 availability for paid reservations...so, I am hoping they become rational and release some seats sometime soon.

Does LH release seats more quickly/easily than LX? Which is better food/champagne/wine?

I take it UA charges a $75 change fee to switch from C to F if F becomes available?

UA.com certainly does not "show" all *A availability. LH, US, Austrian, SQ will usually show, but often times if you want to fly other *A carriers like turkish, Swiss, etc. you may need to call UA MP to see if there's availability.

LX hardly ever shows seats on UA.com, but then again they do not release nearly the inventory that LH normally would. I think part of it is the scale of LH flights from the US as compared to the relatively few flights that LX operates from the US

What are the phantom seats on UA.com that you are referring to?

Phantom seats are the ones that show as being available on LH (or other carriers) when searching on UA.com but when you go to book the ticket, it comes back as not being available.

Everything that I've ever heard (from UA and MM reps) about phantom seats basically suggest that it's UA "assuming" or "predicting" what LH seats may become available. Many times, those seats eventually become open for booking but usually 7-10 days prior to a departure date.

There are extensive threads out there where the Phantom seats are discussed in more detail.

I sthis different from going to UA.com and trying to make an award booking where it comes back with routings and mileage requirements in all three class for flights that are available and doesn't show flights that aren't available. How do you find the phantom seats?

The phantom seats unfortunately show as available when you search for a seat. The phantom seats are included in the search result when you see the three class search results when looking on UA. I hope I'm helping more than I may be confusing you. Sorry if thats the case .

Depends on if you're changing from C to F for your whole trip or if you're just upgrading a C LH segment to F on an F award due to new availability. I booked an F award but could only get C for LH for obvious reasons but I asked the agent if I could call back when I'm T-21/T-14/T-whenever LH decides to release seats and get an F seat for no change fee and was assured yes that was the case.

Booking a F award in C and calling to change when LH opens F award inventory a few days/hours before is pretty common and was good practice for CO Plats ie UA 1ks today.

Less than one week out and wide open flights in F on both LH (from both FRA and MUC) and LX (via ZRH), but no award space. Very frustrating.
