Delays in FRA today (6th October) [RWY 18 closed 06OCT2011]

Hi All,

I am currently in Paris awaiting my rebooked, delayed flight due to a cancellation.

The staff here said that one of the runways at FRA is closed and this has cut the operations in half and has been like this all morning.

Anybody know why and what has happened?

I assume that they still can't use the new runway yet, which is a pitty as that would have made things easier.

Startbahn West RWY 18 is closed 0728-1600Z (UTC) today. They are doing something to 7R/25L this week too, its closing down each night at 2030Z.

Lufthansa on FB said that this has a short-term cause. Doesn't sound like maintenance.... And why can't they wait until end of October to do such stuff..?

There is some construction going on with 7R/25L and 18 these weeks, probably concrete work before the frost hits FRA. RWY 18 has a clear advisory:

A3867/11 - DUE TO CONSTRUCTION WORK ON RWY 18 EXPECT ROUGH SURFACE BTN 1350M
AND 1500M SOUTH OF THR. 28 SEP 04:30 2011 UNTIL 14 OCT 04:30 2011. CREATED:

Well I did notice when I took off from RWY 18 on Wednesday that it seems bumpy, so that would explain that.

To make matters worse, my rebooked flight was delayed due to "bad weather" in Frankfurt (wind?) including sat on the plane for 45 mins (I hate that) so that I am 2.5 hours late arriving and the LH agent in Paris said that I am not entitled to compensation for my cancelled flight and late arrival!

Seems that I will have to write in and complain, also about the lack of information in Paris. Nobody said how late the plane would be and the departure boards simply said "delayed". I had to go online (15 mins free wifi) and rely on the SMS service to find out.

so it is both: RWY18 closure + wind.
The homepage of fraport says:
"Due to current weather conditions (heavy wind), flight cancellations and delays in air traffic might occur at Frankfurt Airport. Passengers are kindly requested to contact their airline and to check traffic reports, e.g. on the radio or on teletext."

Oct 6 delays at Frankfurt

I was delayed going from Venice to Frankfurt this day. Airline staff informed us that there were loose bricks on the runway that needed cleaning up!!!!! Which may make sense if they are infact doing construction/upgrades etc. Who knows? Nothing seems to have been publicized about it.

Good thing my flight FRA-LED on Oct 6th was delayed just by 2 hours so I still had 3 hours to pass border in LED and not paying huge fine for having my passport expired
