The Watts Towers

I would like to visit this monument on my next trip to LA.
I've read some information on the subject, and it says that the locals aren't fond of tourists, outsiders, etc.
Does anyone have any tips on visiting this area, as well as the best (safest)way to get there?

Hi dimramon,

The best way maybe by Metro ( the blue line from Downtown LA to Longbeach has a stop fairly close to the Watts Towers).

I do not recall the name of the station but will try to find it ( I think it is shortly after the Green Line intersection) and it is to the right of the metroline as you face towards LA.

I saw the towers from the Blue line when I visited Long Beach from Universal studios in early November.

One of the towers seemed to have scaffolding and covers around it though.

Regards

See the Wikipedia - it has the Metro stop info.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watts_Towers

I was raised not far from there (5.3 miles according to mapquest) and have never been there. It's very likely most native Californians have never been there, IMO.

Be careful and enjoy it if you go.

the towers are a short walk from the 103d st/kenneth hahn blue line station.

it's as safe as anywhere during the daytime (and you can't see the towers at night, so you wouldn't bother). we might as well tell people to be careful going to disneyland, third street promenade, and malibu.

Drive by

No, not that kind ........ coupla years ago I got the urge to see the Towers, so I drove over there early on a Sunday morning. I figured that was the safest time to be in the part of town. If someone thinks the locals don't like visitors, well they've had an awfully long time to get used to them!

This visit will only take 15 or 20 minutes, you walk around the outside of the enclave and look at the towers, marvel briefly at their eccentricity, and then drive away.
