Just to chime in on the car in L.A. thing, while I am a big public transit fan, in L.A. you just about must have a car, especially if you are a tourist.
Plus, rental cars are pretty cheap at LAX and,by the time you get to your hotel by taxi you will have spent as much as, or more, than it would have cost to rent a car. Keep in mind when choosing a hotel that many have free parking, others, especially downtown or in Beverly Hills, rip you off with pay to park or valet parking. Often, you can park on the street for free at night, if you are careful to read the signs. |
the "you must have a car in LA" crowd is just as dogmatic as the crowd that suggests you can go anywhere with public transportation. don't get a car just because people say you have to.
guide yourself with the following considerations: does your hotel have a free airport shuttle? that's probably the biggest car need you would have. the chinese theater, magic castle, universal studios/citywalk, disney hall, dorothy chandler pavilion--all of these places are an easy walk from a red line subway station. but getting to/from an airport, especially LAX, on public trans is not an easy task. and if you're not staying near a red line stop (for example, if you're staying on the sunset strip), then the subway is not the best option. if you want to go to the beach or disneyland, a car is absolutely necessary. and i think someone said earlier, LA is so spread out that taxi fares can really kill you. renting a car is usually much cheaper and easier. |
