LA Opera-Appropriate Men's Attire

For a retired couple (not me) attending an evening performance at the LA Opera not on an opening night, what is the gentleman's recommended attire?
(a) Suit
(b) Coat & Tie
(c) Business Casual
(d) any of the above

Thanks.

I personally wear a suit. It is up to the individual. I haven't been to an opening night; it could be different for such a performance.

Never been to the LA Opera, but have attended a few Master Chorale and LA Phil performaces at the Music Center and Disney. A jacket and tie would put you right in the middle of the fashion spectrum.

If going to the opera in LA is similar to other big cities around the country, you can wear whatever you feel is suitable. In most cities you will see anything from tuxedoes to jeans, even on opening night (unless it is a gala).

Given the problems they are having with the sets for the new opera "Grendel", maybe a hard-hat is appropriate

It depends on whether it is a matinee or evening

For matinees, slacks, a polo shirt and a blazer are fine. For an evening, non-opening, a collared shirt with nice slacks will work. You will see all types, from jeans to tuxes. You don't need a tie on a non-opening night.

I think the problems with the sets are mostly resolved, although there are little glitches here and there. The opera is visually amazing, though!

I agree.I attend often and I usually have opening night tix(front orchestra)I have gotten so tired of seeing the same faces that I often exchange my dates just to avoid the same old crowd.
Some of the men are in black tie on opening nights. But their formal suits are either so old,or badly fitting that they look silly.
The Opera gets a much more appriciative and younger crowd on weekends-and the energy is much better.
I usually wear a dark suit or blazer and slacks.
