DTLA was interesting. We parked in Little Tokyo, walked to Union Station, then Olivera Street and the old Pueblo. We had taquitos at Cielo Linda and churros from a street vendor. We walked down to Grand Central Market and I was disappointed to find Villa Tacos closed. Still, we found good tacos, ceviche, ramen, and ice cream. The walk from the market to The Last Bookstore ( which was really cool BTW) and then to Little Tokyo was a bit of sensory overload. Glad we saw these iconic sights but no need to do it again.

Great advice in this thread, no way we could have done everything suggested, but we'll refer back to it for the inevitable future visits. Thank you all.

Sounds like a good trip--- did the teens like it too? Glad you made it to the Last Bookstore & hope you went upstairs as well.
is Villa tacos closed permanently or just that day?

Villa Tacos seemed to be closed just for the day.

We ventured upstairs at Last Bookstore and explored the labyrinth. My 12 year old is into anime and was told to find the white circular room. She said this was one of the best vacations ever.

My 17 year old is into aviation and between the runway views from our hotel and our visit to Proud Bird last night, he was also thrilled.

I've come away with a new appreciation for LA. We'll visit again.

FWIW, anime expo chibi will be in Ontario during November 7-9 this year (https://www.showclix.com/event/axc25-gen-reg-scx25-r11) and Anime Expo in DTLA July 2-5, 2026 (https://www.anime-expo.org/).

Pokémon World Championships 2025 was in Anaheim in August but will be in SF during August 28-30 next year.

And, if your 17 year old (or older) is with you on the next vacation to Southern California, we'll have plenty of suggestions on the aviation side of the area that go well beyond LAX and Proud Bird.

Ok..I broke down and bought a cookie today. Heavenly. And it's warm so the chocolate is all melty and messy. I had to put the rest in the freezer...I could barely drive with chocolate all over my hands since I took a bite when I got to my car. I don't know if it's the best cookie in the world but it surely has to be in the top 5. Reminds me a bit of the ones at Bristol Farms.

It's probably the exact same since Bristol and Lazy Acres are owned by the same company.

However, my family and a few friends did a blind taste test of turkey sandwiches from many locations in Hermosa and surrounding territory.
The winner was Granny's Deli on Monterey between 6th and 7th Streets.

Doing these taste tests at a party are a family tradition.

BTW, the best chocolate chip cookies in the world are from the bakery at Lazy Acres market, corner of PCH and Artesia. They are the crack cocaine of cookies.

As DJ_Iceman noted, Bristol Farms and Lazy Acres are owned by the same company and share the offering of "The Cookie" across their stores. However, after doing some much needed taste testing, there is variation of production of the cookie and its eating qualities across the chains as well as store to store.

As shown, 3 types of cookies are offered: dark chocolate chip, milk chocolate chip and peanut butter. While the peanut butter versions are good, the stars are the two chocolate chip cookies. All three are served warm and gooey and delicious.

Of the cookies so far tested, the best dark chocolate chip is from the Lazy Acres in Long Beach with the Bristol Farms RHE right behind. The dark chocolate chip cookie I received at the Lazy Acres HB didn't have as much chip density as the others. However, the milk chocolate chip cookie from Lazy Acres HB was actually the best so far sampled.

More sampling and testing required though.

Should you come to the next San Diego Do, check out The Cookie at the Encinitas Lazy Acres. The original cookie is outstanding. We sporadically buy one and cut it in two. It's a delicious treat. I'm not a fan of the peanut butter cookie.

Speaking of pizza, I may want to try a pastrami pie. It looks like there is a place called Hank's near the airport that has it and has decent reviews. I didn't see one on Slice & Pint's menu. Any thoughts on Hank's or other places that have such a pie?

This is where I get mine and I think they claim to be the inventor or something. Hermosa Beach. They also sell by the slice if you don't want a whole pie. Great sandwiches too.
I have heard of Hanks but don't know a thing about it.
Paisano's in Hermosa also has it but you have to ask for the pickles. But Mickey's would be my first choice. Street parking.

A slice of pastrami pie from Mickey's based on corky 's recommendation:

The absolute best cost/benefit food in Hermosa is at La Playita, a Mexican restaurant overlooking Nobel Park (a very small park on the Strand). Great food (my favorite is the chili relleno, with fluffy egg batter on the outside and mild chili inside - order one, two or three) and quirky fun waitstaff, many of whom have been there forever. Note there is a very limited beer, wine and hard drink menu. Good breakfast place, too.
